Trading Johnny Cueto!

Featured Replies

Sounds like the Dodgers might be a suitor since Ryu is out for the year.

That playoff rotation would be sick.

Cueto for Julio Urias and Zack Lee.

Sure. Why not ask for Joc Pederson as well? They aren't getting Urias.

Is Cueto no longer an ace did I miss something, normally an ace will get you a high prospect?

It may not matter if this elbow stiffness turns out to be more!

The good news of they rebuild, the pitching is already pretty deep in this orginization. If they trade a few pieces the offense should be able to catch up, making it a quicker rebuild than normal. But I have yet to see if Walt has the brass to trade for the future

Not an 18 year old top 10 prospect in all of baseball. Not for a half season rental on a guy that threw 250 innings last season and is missing his next start due to elbow stiffness. They might have gotten that last season when he had 1 1/2 years left on his contract. Since the rules have changed and teams that trade for rentals don't get supplemental picks back when they leave the return is not what it one was.

An 18 year old who has a ton of opportunities still to blow out his own elbow.

At least with Cueto you know you're getting something good (the elbow thing excepted). That 18yo hot prospect may turn out to be David Clyde for all we know. Most of them do.

Really? You're going to downgrade one of the top 10 prospects in the minors because he could blow his arm out? For a 29 year old that just missed a start with am elbow problem?

Let me ask you this: You are the GM of the Dodgers. The Reds offer you Cueto for Urias and Lee or another top prospect. You get Cueto for at most 18 starts after he's already missed a start and thrown 250 innings last season with a checkered injury history. OR you keep Urias, he blows arm out this season, has TJ surgery and still wins 100 games for your before free agency since he's only 19. Who would you pick?

In no universe where they breathe oxygen are the Reds getting Urias for Cueto.

I guess the Cubs should trade Bryant for Cueto since he might blow a knee out running the bases, right?

Can't really discount that elbow if you're playing for this year can you? This isn't a guy that struck out 13 per 9 in the Carolina League. This is a top 10 prospect in all of baseball. For a half season rental with a gimpy elbow. Ain't happenin cap'n.

All I'm saying is you're dealing with two uncertainties. With one, you have a pretty good idea of his level. With another, there's just hope.

Obviously everything changes if Cueto's got some nasty injury. But if he were traded and had that issue, it's not like he'd pass the physical anyway. But going on what we know about Johnny Cueto, and if the injury proves not to be serious, then it's a deal you make all day long given the uncertainty when it comes to prospects.

Again, David Clyde.

Wow, a David Clyde reference. That takes me back a bunch of years !

I feel it's often important to bring up perhaps the biggest "hot prospect" failure ever to add levity to the conversation about hot prospects and their relative value.
