BTW he batted .268 last year, not .250 just sayin.

And played in half his teams games. Seems pretty valuable. Marlon Byrd had a higher WAR than Hamilton last year. Think he is better than all those scrubs I mentioned?

I agree that the Reds won't pay him probably what he can get, but if they did you made it sound as if it was known he would turn it down and go elsewhere. That is what I was commenting about.

I'm sure if the Reds wanted to start hemorrhaging money and be in the red, he accept a contract with them if they offered him that much. They don't have the money to do it though.

Teams are doing a lot better than the Reds with much smaller payrolls. It can be done, and teams in markets like Cincinnati cannot afford to pay multiple guys huge contracts. Simple as that. You can win with smaller payrolls, the Royals, Rays, and A's are all proof of that.

Plus, seeing as Cueto is hitting 30, there's no way in hell they should consider giving him 6+ years like he's going to get. Just doesn't make sense.

I think the problem right now is they have committed to too many players -- Votto, Phillips and Bailey.

I agree with some of what some on here have said, too much money spent on wrong guys. Votto deserved his money, Bailey no and Phillips no.

It can be done with smaller payrolls, you are correct. The problem is you have to have the scouts and the GM to do that as well as the owner. Our farm system was built up to a pretty good system after Marge was forced to sell only to be ripped right back down with current ownership.

To enable to be successful with a small payroll you have to have the players in your system. Reds don't.

^You'll get no arguments from me that the Reds management is incompetent. Walt is awful.

Votto deserved his money I'm just not sure the Reds should have been the one to give him a 10 year deal. I have no problem paying him now but when he is 38+ I don't think paying him $25 mil is going to look to good.

Agreed. That deal, along with the Phillips deal, has financially hamstrung the organization, and they're paying the price now.

Heck, the Cardinals have a payroll that is only about $3 million more than the Reds--that's the cost of a 4th outfielder. The Reds are not a small market team. They're a mid-market team. If they manage their resources properly their is no reason they cannot compete year in, year out.

And if they want to offer him that kind of contract they can still do so even if they trade him. Look at what the Cubs did with Jake Arrieta. They traded him and then resigned him. The Red Sox nearly did the same thing with Lester.

I believe their current TV deal runs out in the next year or two also. Should receive additional revenue from this in the next few years. I'm sure though this was taken into account with the contracts for Votto and Bailey so I'm not sure if payroll will be going up

Why?

Why would you trade one of your best players? I hate conversations like this. Never makes sense to trade your best and expect your team to get better. It never works out that way.

Trade your best pitcher to get a so so pitcher in return and another so so position player in return? Stupid.

It certainly makes a ton of sense if you stand to lose the player to free agency and I think we all know that the Reds can't afford to pay Cueto what he is worth and they are no longer talking contract! What do you get if he is not traded and he walks, draft picks? We all know how that can pan out. Cueto and for that matter Chapman can both bring nice young players in return and this team needs that more than they need Cueto and Chapman.

The Reds had one of the best farm systems about 7-8 years ago. Most of those guys are now on the big league club. They haven't done a great job replacing those guys which is why they are in the position they are now. Trading Cueto and Chapman would go a long way in helping rebuild that.

The Latos trade did a lot to help thin the system with Grandal, Alonso and Boxberger going to San Diego along with major leaguer Edinson Volquez. I didn't like the trade at the time because I thought they gave up way too much. Latos was good for the Reds but those minor leaguers might have gotten the Reds other pieces that would have helped more.

Who is better than Josh Hamilton other than maybe Votto

Josh Hamilton is a drug addict that has subjected his body to more than it can handle. He is breaking down a little bit more every year. That's what drugs do to your body eventually. The Reds saw that firsthand and made the right move at the time.
