April 10, 201511 yr I hate stories like this. My son is only three but if he were older I would not let him have facebook. I do not know what the answer is. I do not know how to help. As I teacher I try to be as diligent and aware of what is going on in my classroom and hallway. I bet I have missed some stuff. This is the first I had heard of this story and I live relatively close to SK. Sorry lawildcat, I do not have an answer and there is nothing anyone can say right now that will bring peace to this family. So I do what I know how to, pray, teach, listen, and learn.
April 10, 201511 yr My guess is that there were many factors that caused a young person to make such a terrible decision. Bullying would be one but we need to be careful to not label it as THE reason. Something so irrational is never that straightforward.
April 10, 201511 yr I guess I must have missed a story about an incident at Fort Thomas. What happened there, and what does that have to do with this young man at Simon Kenton? I never will understand the reason for bullying kids or anyone for that matter over their sexual preference.
April 10, 201511 yr As the coach of this kid, and a close personal friend of the family, this has been a tragic situation. We are having a good debate IMO in the other thread of bully vs harassing, and other variables, and yes there may be some comparison in the two events, but they really are two different situations. With that said, bringing this up, less than 12 hours after the services to say goodbye to this kid, after the family asked for things to be kept on the down low for the moment while they grieve ....The word filter wouldn't let me post what I wanted too, probably a good thing. You disappoint me.

How is this any different than bringing up any of the police shootings, Trayvon Martin, or anything of the like?

Let the family know that strangers are sad and praying for them.
April 10, 201511 yr Just calling a spade a spade. Why should all the focus be on one school? What are you doing to fight the culture of bullying at both these schools? So you used the tragic event of a teen suicide to take a shot at another poster on a relatively anonymous message board because of his anti-Highlands views on a myriad of topics? We live in a social media 24/7 media driven world where our youth face bullying and harrassment that we cannot imagine. A student has tragically taken their own life and you want to use that to make a point about the Highlands urine incident and how bullying and harassment is not endemic to Highlands? Just.......wow..... Edited April 10, 201511 yr by 4pointplay spelling
April 10, 201511 yr In 2000 or so news agencies elected to minimalize coverage of school shootings for the fear that the excessive coverage may have a hand in troubled teens taking guns to school. Is this something that needs to be addressed when it comes to kids who are facing bullying and issues? In an attempt to create awareness are we glorifying teens who take their lives? Another question should these social media sites be held responsible? Most of them you have to be 18 to join and none of these kids are 18, and the sites aren't pretending to police that and the misuse. Prayers to this family.
April 10, 201511 yr My Prayers go out to the family and hopefully this haunts the kids or kid that did this for the rest of their life!
April 10, 201511 yr Sad for the family. No way posters on here know of the family's request to keep things quiet. Plus, as Guru says, the issue of bullying needs exposure. Let the family know that strangers are sad and praying for them. Plantman brings up some very good points, and believe me, he is pretty close to this situation, and knows (as do I), that in short, let's just say some of the assumptions here about this situation that are being put out there on this thread are at best, a little incorrect. Without getting into too many details, the two issues being linked are not really in the same universe. There are still a lot of questions that are trying to be answered, and realistically, this thread should probably be closed and removed before it gets even further off track. Let's let the family deal with the issues that are ongoing, and allow them to grieve.
April 10, 201511 yr Very sad for the victim and his family. I pray they find comfort and peace and they don't lose hope.
April 10, 201511 yr If it were not connected to bullying then yes, the topic should be off limits and private for the family. If the tragedy is connected to bullying then the thread should continue but we must all keep in mind that there is a family grieving the loss of a loved one.

That's kinda what I'm saying....there's much more to the story.
April 16, 201511 yr There weren't names named here, and besides, fact is fact. This is a tragedy, and the thread was brought up to highlight the tragedy. How is this any different than bringing up any of the police shootings, Trayvon Martin, or anything of the like? It isn't any different at all but in an agenda driven society feigned dramatics take place when folks feel "appalled". Folks can say what they want but I bet we won't see 60K views on this thread.
