Ole Ashland fans just cant get out of the past, It is not the great job it once was. Maybe not a top 5 job at this point. What big name coaches have applied?

 

You don't believe Ashland is a top 5 job in the 16th region? Really? I imagine that any good coach that knows much about Ashland would disagree. Ashland was consistently winning regional championships before Biggs arrived.

Lots of kids concentrate on one sport now and you lose those kids when their sport isn't basketball.

 

That was definetly one of Bigg's problems. However he lost players because HE was the coach asking kids to choose one sport over another. He shot himself in the foot in that sense.

Eight years resulting in over 160 wins and then lost best player and second best player moved causing this poor season is bad? Feel sorry for next guy if he doesn't reach those heights.

 

From everything I have heard his coaching ability wasn't as big of a factor as some of his rules. When you ask multi sport players to choose basketball over everything else, kick kids off the team because they have shoulder length hair, etc, your gonna lose a portion of your talent base. Had so many kids not elected to play for the man due to that nonsense, he would probably have some regional championships under his belt and we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

 

Personally I think he's a good person and a great in game coach. He was able to do a lot with little to work with in some years. But IMO, he is the reason he had little to work with and that is a problem.

Sure the region has had a couple of good teams the last several years, but more often than not the region is very weak. This year was a perfect example, and is the norm for the 16th region.

 

This was a weaker year than in the past. Elliot with the Faulkners, Rowan with Wing and Townsend, Fleming with Burns and Steward, and even Russell with Skaggs was better than even team in the region this year. If Miller and Thornton were on the team Ashland has a legit shot this year.

 

I agree. Most talent doesn't always translate into best team. That's where Biggs fell short.

This simply isn't true. Some of Biggs best players at Ashland have played other sports. Examples: Drew McDavid, Matt Thomas, Corey Gregg, Cody Withrow, Ryan Whetsel, Kyle Bush, Will Skaggs, Ryan Bonner, Logan Salow, Dylan Delaney just to name several. But that doesn't fit the narrative.

Still hearing Sheldon Clark's Frank Smith II is the top candidate for the job.

I absolutely agree when you say that the Ashland job is a top 5 job in the region but does that make it a premier job in the state in this day and time.

Kids are getting to play more year round basketball, and against great competition with good coaching (AAU). and 2) Ashland will never be patient enough with a coach to allow him to build the program from the bottom up. Ashland built their house on proverbial sand when they became so dependent on transfers.

I'll bite.....how many? Zero? Next question...what was he supposed to do while there? I admit, it's nice for the HC to show up and be seen, but I know a lot of coaches who "coach their coaches" at the MS level so that there is some familiarity with the system when they get to the HS. Being a high school coach is a year round job if done properly. Add in the mix a family and I'd say he had his hands full.

 

As far as patience...4 region finals in 9 years is pretty solid. You can only PRAY for that type of success from the next coach. And make sure he goes to MS games!!:thumb:

Has nothing to do with coaching your coaches. But if you want to have a program that doesn't rely on transfers like he had in the past, seems one would build that rapport with the younger generation. Or keep on keepin on. Hoping the boosters get the job done otherwise.
