Well Smith will only say that the job has not be offered nor has any money been discussed but someone, either Ashland or Smith needs to make a decision. Apparently Smith is not happy in Martin County because he was the one that called Ashland when the job came open. Every year since he has been here the off season has been one of wonderment for Cardinal basketball fans and players as he has went and talked with other schools and that is not fair to them. Smith is like so many other coaches, money comes first and loyalty has nothing to do with things. If he takes the Ashland job then they will have to wonder after every season. Are you kidding me with this? An apology? Are you telling me that if a position came open in your job for more money and benefits that you wouldn't go after it? If you say no, you're lying. As a Cardinal fan, I hate the thoughts of him leaving. I think he is good for these kids. And I don't mean just the ones on the basketball court. I hope he stays. He is a great coach and truly cares for his kids. But, if he goes, I don't blame him. Everyone wants to do whats best for their family.

I completely agree. Money is a factor in everything. When it comes to money, there is no loyalty as far as jobs and opportunities are concerned. That's just a part if life.

To be fair and no disrespect to any if our Martin County members, but I would jump at the first opportunity to get out of that area myself if I lived there.

What about hiring a coach from the area that will put down roots and want to stay in Ashland. Any young up and comers in the area? How is Derek Cooksey doing at Fairview? Didn't he play his high school ball at Paul Blazer?

Cooksey did play at Ashland, his father Rex was an assistant for a period of time. Jeremy Howell would be a good choice if Ashland goes that route. Jason Strader would have been a good choice, but he just took a job at Russell. Adam Howard would be great also, but I don't see him coming back.

 

I went to school will three of them and believe they all would make good coaches. I'm just not sure if Ashland will hire someone with little head coaching experience. I wouldnt have any problems with any of the three available getting the job, I actually like the idea of a young coach that can relate with the kids.

I don't think it would be a bad move to hire a young coach who's fired up and I agree, relating with the kids is huge

Bill Bradley is an interesting discussion piece. Obviously he's had success with the Kittens and has coaches boys before .... However, who knows if either side is interested in making that change. Would he even want to leave a successful program to try to re-energize a program (what it sounds like many of you are saying needs done)?

Just to throw this out, Ashland has the opportunity to hire the best coach available in Steve Dodd. He is a 73 graduate of Paul Blazer, an NAIA Hall Of Fame Coach and also coached at Russell for 6 years. Had it not been for an injury to Derek Sloane in the first minute of the 05 regional final, Russell would have beaten Rowan Co. He won it in 06 with his weakest team during this three year span and in 07 was a prohibitive favorite before top player Jon Vanhoose went down with a knee injury in the districts. Russell had already beaten Elliott Co bad twice during the regular season. This man can coach!!! I had decided to stay off this web site awhile back but I sure hate to see Ashland miss this chance. I always liked coach Dodd. I hadn't heard anything about him in years. Is he coaching anywhere currently or is he semiretired? I think he would make someone a good coach but do have some concerns. The main concern would be how long would he stick around before retiring. Also how involved would he be with the feeder systems. I don't doubt his coaching ability one bit, but sometimes (not all the time) coaches that are close to retirement don't get fully involved with all aspects of the program.
