Oh I agree Westwood1 that it is no longer as attractive a coaching job without the economic backing it once had with the major companies in the backyard, but on the whole it is still a premier coaching spot for the Eastern half of the state. Then again, you may be on to something that this portion of the state is just not attractive for most coaches to relocate to.

It will take some work for whoever is the coach next year at Blazer.

As far as building a program to win the 16th Region year in year out, I would imagine it's much easier to compete for that now than say it was 20 years ago. If people remember it was not that long ago that 3 largest schools Ashland, Boyd, & Greenup were once not only top schools in our region but respected through out the state. I agree that the economic shift has hurt all 3 schools and the region as a whole, but there is no reason why Ashland shouldn't be competing for the 16 Region title every year.

Just for the sake of conversation, What about this job makes it premier? Back a few years ago I would agree with Ashland being a premier job "Ashland Oil and ARMCO" to name a couple of reasons, but what makes it prmier now?

 

 

The simple answer us that while Marathon and AK Steel aren't what they once were, the 16th region is also much weaker than it was back then. IMO, Ashland is still full of talent and has tremendous financial supoort. Factor that in with the region as a whole not being what it once was, the right coach could do really well at Ashland in the near future.

 

Ashland has some good talent coming up the next few years. If I was a coach wanting to move to greener pastures I believe I would have to take all of that into consideration, not just the state of the program the past 10 years under coach Biggs.

I have no inside knowledge but I would anticipate an announcement by the end of the week. A lot of organization needs to be done in the Spring so I can't see them wasting a lot of time.

I think a wise move by any coach that has any desire to stay there for any length of time is to invest in the youth leagues. Invest his time and be present there. Someone needs to attempt to change the culture there, IMO. I'd try my best to encourage my young kids to play in the summers. AAU provides extra time developing their games. Baseball does it. Perhaps you'd win some of those kids who will chase other avenues of sporting interest if you encourage them to stick with hoops. The head coach will have to work, like Sunshine says, but I'd advise him to be willing to invest his time to the whole program. Ashland has far too long relied on transfers. I won't beat that horse, but they have plenty of kids that transfers should be a bonus, not the crux of the team.

Eight years resulting in over 160 wins and then lost best player and second best player moved causing this poor season is bad? Feel sorry for next guy if he doesn't reach those heights.

Yes I believe that should be the Ashland standard.

I'll throw a name out there for everyone. Why not Bill Bradley? He's done an excellent job as the girls coach. I think he would be an excellent choice for the boys job.
