Did NCC have a successful season?

Featured Replies

28-4 is a very successful season no matter how you size it up sure their ultimate goal was to win the region and state and they didnt get there but they still had a great year. Only one team can win the region and when you play in a region with more than 1 or 2 good teams it can be tough. NCC lost to a very good Holmes team, sure they are disappointed but those kids layed it on the line night in and night out and that is all you can ask!!

I know Ronny was a HUGE part of that team that won Region his junior year, but IMO Tony Bagicalupo (however you spell it) was the key to success. The next year they returned 4 of 5 starters and had a nice player transfer in from Grant Co to replace Tony B and couldn't get it done without him. He was a great leader and like another coach on the floor. I don't claim to be an expert on New Cath basketball, but is that what this group of Seniors was missing? Perhaps they just haven't had that guy to rally them when they needed it most these past 3-4 years?

How do you spell this ?

Tony was a role player who was at best the 4th or 5th best player on that team. He was good and no disrespect but Ronny was the engine and the star .

Everybody is different and everyone's perspective is different. If I was on this team ten years from now I'd still be disappointed in the ending but I would say my team had a successful season this year.

I had this same conversation with someone else a week ago concerning Boyle County.

Bolded I would disagree with. It does matter "how you size it up". The record itself is rarely used as THE indicator of success.

One of my favorite sayings is from Wooden "Never mistake activity for achievement". To be great - working hard and laying it on the line every night is a given for teams that want to be successful. Hard work unfortunately is only an activity. The achievement (success) is quantified differently.

Just because you dont get the ultimate prize doesnt mean you arent successful, NCC didnt lose to some chump school they lost to one of the top programs in the state of Kentucky which has a very talented point guard and other talented players, last year they lost to the eventual state champions, the year before they lost to a great Holmes team. I will take 28-4 any year as success, maybe not my ultimate goal but still a very successful year!! .

Anything can happen in the post-season. Especially in a tough region like the 9th

I think that you could call it a successful season.... but I would lean towards it being disappointing.

If Ballard loses in the region, they'll not consider it a success. Neither would Trinity. Neither would Oldham County. Neither would Henderson. Personally, winning the region is the prize. Just to get to Rupp. After that, it's icing on the cake.

Couldn't agree more. I would say Trinity thinks the didn't have a successful season and NCC sure shouldn't. Regular season is much easier to play then the post season and unfortunately for them NCC (and Trinity) proven the last 2 years they aren't a good post season.

I also say UK will say they had a disappointing overall season if they don't win it all. These statements may not seem fair, but success should be judged by the post season for the top programs.

Mentioned an another thread, (depends on how you define a great season) so success also depends on how you define it. I've read a lot of opinions on why NCC lost to Holmes with questions along the lines was it the lack if depth, coaching, the other team wanted it more, just a bad matchup, etc? This team had great senior leadership and talent, from what I've read, two D-1 recruits, another likely collegiate recruit and they didn't win one regional title??? Not sure there is another 9th region team alive with 3 seniors likely playing collegiate bb next season, let alone two D-1 players. Defining your program may be part of the problem, if NCC's administration, staff, players, and supporters are content with this early round loss, and no regional title in 5 yrs and they define this season as successful or great, then possibly there in lies some of the problem. Great programs expect greatness and don't settle for less.

With players like that , sounds like a big '' L '' for the year. My OP is you need both regular and post season success. To call it a successful season. ( unless you have no talent , predicted to win only a few games ,and then win 12 or 13 and maybe a post season game. ) could call that a success. Greenup co last year was 12 -16 in regular, then won district, and a regional game. The post season was kind of a success , but with out the regular not being , I wouldn't call it a totally successful season.. To me 20 or more regular season win`s , and a district championship ,pulse a few regional games (wins ) , I would call a success..... Now making the sweet 16 and win a few , would be even better , but for most schools that is few and far between. So I`m saying a really good regular season and district champ, at lest 1 regional win , would work for most schools.

A very bitter ending to what was a very successful season up until that Holmes defeat! Most diehard Ncc fans wanted that journey south and nothing else!

No shame in losing in the Regional to the eventual champion each year. It may even happen this year as Holmes seems to be clicking right now. So NCC lost in finals in 12', 13', and to eventual Champ Covcath in semis last year.
