Did NCC have a successful season?

Featured Replies

No, I wouldn't consider it successful. They won the All A, which is cool, but I don't even think their regular season was that good. They didn't win a game all season against a team I've got in the top 20 in Kentucky. Add to it that arguably their best win is also against the team that knocked them out of the post season, and you've got a disappointing season for a team most people considered was at the very least top 10 in the state (most probably had them closer to top 5).

Thier best win was at Taylor Co. against St. Louis Christian Academy, 5 DI signees all 6'-6'' to 7'-0".

It was a successful seasons, but a disappointing ending for sure. However, you have to bring your A game to the regional tourney or it can be over like that. Many teams with as much talent have found themselves on the outside looking in. Unfortunately for the Breds the last 3 years they have found themselves in this company.

No shame in losing in the Regional to the eventual champion each year. It may even happen this year as Holmes seems to be clicking right now. So NCC lost in finals in 12', 13', and to eventual Champ Covcath in semis last year.

NCC has lost in the first round the last 3 years. In other words they haven't won a regional game since 2012. I could be wrong on the round? . I know aspirations were higher. The senior players most likely never experienced playing and winning a regional game. That still doesn't mean it wasn't successful. I still believe only NCC can decide whether their season was successful or not. The coaches and players are the only ones who's opinion matters. However, for the tradition rich teams, anything less than a regional title is usually not considered adequate. Right now I doubt any of the coaches or players care what anyone outside their locker room thinks. And quite frankly they shouldn't care.

I am pretty sure that they lost in the first round in 2012-13, not the finals, believe it was against Holmes.

Great point.

Are they the Bengals of NKY High School basketball?

Not even close, the Bengals SUCK.

As a coach, I don't consider success in the "wins and losses" column. It just isn't that simple. A team can win 3 games and have a successful season. A team can win 30 games and though be considered a good season, may not be a successful season. It's all very relative.

Like I, most coaches I assume set levels of expectations on players and the team as a whole at the beginning of the season. Success is based on that ability/expectations and realistic, achievable goals. Sometimes those goals might be very tough, but achievable. In my opinion, if a team/players play to the best of their ability every night, giving 100% and can only win 3 games, then they have been a success in my mind. And there are teams that every year fit this description. On the flip side, if a team has not lived up to individual player expectations and overall team expectations/goals, then even if they have won 30 games, it can be looked at as not successful by those involved...or at least the very least not AS successful as originally planned for and what expectations would dictate could/should be.

With all of that said, regardless of whatever outside opinion I might have, I will let the coaches and teams decide if they have had a successful season or not, and I will determine if my team was successful or not in so far as success on the basketball floor regardless of others opinions. And lets all remember too, upsets happen. These young men aren't robots and they don't all have their "A" game every night. That's why they play the game on the floor and not on paper.

Tony was a role player who was at best the 4th or 5th best player on that team. He was good and no disrespect but Ronny was the engine and the star .

I'm not disagreeing with you on this at all and wasn't trying to talk up Tony B's talent as a basketball player. I am saying his leadership was the key. The next year they brought in a kid that was arguably more talented than him to replace him in the starting lineup but couldn't match their success from the previous season (not at the All-A or the Region).

I think back to more recently when Newport won the region beating a stacked Holmes team who was primed for a repeat. The Collins kid was not their best player and was probably 3-4 option at best, but without his leadership and coaching on the floor there was no chance of that team making the run that they did. Everyone can look back and say that undoubtedly Demarco Foster was their best player and engine, if you will, but without Collins that team falls apart IMO.

I am just asking the question, did New Cath have that guy the past few years? I don't really know the answer, but from watching them several times I am not sure that they did. Yes, this group of seniors was extremely talented and by all accounts a very hard working group, but when they got down early Friday night I didn't see anyone on the court that pulled them together to regroup them or who had the "refuse to lose" type mentality that I think all teams need to make a deep run in the post season.

The players cared for a minute, The coach should care a lot longer. Sound`s to me they don't have a lack of players, so there is a problem somewhere . Is it coaching ? I don't know the team, coach or program, just what I`ve read on here. But with that much talent and 1st round lose `s each year, the blame has to go some where... The kids do get over the lose faster, but they will remember it for life, and what could have been.

When you list it like that it looks bad. That's a lot of talent on the floor the past 5 seasons. I think they could have won any of these games. The NCC program clearly has a wall in front of them - how do they break through?
