I understand the pro/cons on photographers.

 

However, while I have no dog in this fight, it frustrates me that they move the broadcast media that has covered their team's games throughout the season, or general broadcasters such as Northern Kentucy Sports.com or Tri-State Internet sports off of press row and to a totally unacceptable position in the North endzone. It is my opinion that a venue intending to showcase local high school and college sporting events, should also be held accountable to provide comparable media coverage space at their venue. This obviously doesn't exist at the BOKC.

 

I TOTALLY agree that there is presently insufficient space on what is now press row, and that a competition of sorts, as referred to by Lawnboy, exists among broadcasters.

 

My 100% point is that the problem exists within the facility, that no media space, which is provided at other area venues and throughout other college venues opposite the scorers table and team benches, or via press boxes, exists at the BOKC. This has been an issue since the facility was built and has not been rectified, nor apparently has there been any effort made to rectify the situation.

 

The "we can't accomodate you, therefore you are being herded into the endzone" doesn't fly.

 

As stated, they have the upcoming 2016 Girls KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Tournament coming to the BOKC next March. Most schools outside of Northern Kentucky have local radio station coverage, and will request broadcast space. Either floor, or pressbox space will need to be provided. At present SMG/BOKC are demonstrating that they cannot even handle the local internet media which do cover local schools. The problem lies with the BOKC and not the school/community affiliated broadcast outlets.

Am I the only one that is concerned about this?????

They really need to sort this out. Northern Kentucky is going to look mighty stupid to invite teams from around the state to a big time state tournament expected to function as a first class event in a college arena, and if they end up pushing broadcasters from around the state to the end zones that's just not gonna fly. We might have a 2 year contract for this tournament, but if they can't fix that, it'll be 2 and done. This big facility should be able to handle it properly, and if they don't get on it they're just shooting themselves in the foot all the while making Northern Kentucky look inept.

BOK hosted the Division II Elite Eight and National Championship that was broadcasted on CBS with Tim Brando. A major NCAA event. They had Media on both sidelines and end zones. I'm sure they will be fine..

I'm not telling you what to do panda, but here's what I would do if I were you....

 

Go buy a domain ($10-15 a year) and start a free blog with Blogger or Wordpress. Give is a cute name like KyBasketballPics.com or something along those lines and post all your pics that you take anyways on there.

 

Then when you apply for credentials, you are the owner of KyBasketballPics.com.

 

You will have no further issues.

I can see some of the angst in regards to media credentials and the like, but from the sound of things, it has gotten a little loose.

One item that is devoid in Northern Kentucky is a radio station to carry games on the radio. That's what makes Kentucky basketball unique in the smaller areas across the state.

Getting to listen to Danny Weedle call games on WFTM out of Maysville is fun and you see it in many regions across the state. Heck most every team in the 16th Region has a radio station that broadcasts their games.

I can see where the online only broadcasts can cause some problems and I understand it is a newer outlet to cover games for schools and I'm sure the decision was not made lightly.

The 9th Region at BOKC is a boon for the participants. The 9th Region Tourney makes more money than any other regional tournament in the state and I don't think it is fairly close.

In reality, it is a great experience for the participants and it should be all about the players.

Schools profit very well in times in which money is tight, especially for the participants. They payouts I would believe are very welcomed by the participating schools.

Going forward I can see how it can get a little cramped on the press row with all the internet broadcast teams so sending them to one of the endzones should not be that bad. Sure the sight lines are not as good, but you still get to provide the service that you are there for.

The BOKC is what it is and it would be nice to have a different set up for the opposite side of the floor where the high roller seats are, but there is not need for one at the BOKC with NKU. Maybe going forward they can carve that out in the future.

Sure there are some things that can be adjusted in the future, but it is far better holding the tourney there than at a high school gym.

I have stayed a bit quiet on this subject because the arena has always done right by us. Another option, which we took this year with the new setup was to go over early and take a look. We saw what we were up against which has been outlined in these posts, and asked for a different setup. Although it is preferable to be courtside, which we have been for the past 6 years, we moved up to the concourse level. Taking ourselves out of the mess. I may get players mixed up as i'm old and the vision is the first thing to go, but where we will be works for us.

 

Just working in advance with the staff at the arena and getting the approval from the Tournament staff was all it took for us. The operations folks are top notch, Bill & Stephen are the easiest going folks around and happy to help any way they can.

 

Although it does not help paNDA, he was brought up at the Girls draw by the Holy Cross folks. It's my hope that he got on someone's pass list. I was not allowed to add him to mine.

 

I have to think that what the changes are this year is the beginning of preparation for the Girls State Tournament next year, where any photographer is charged $150.00 to take pics. If we are to broadcast any games next year at the state for our local teams, it will cost me $500.00. We're fortunate that we don't have to pay now for the region as we thoought we might in year 1. Remember that mess?

 

There are 16 seats in the endzone, from what I understand, first come first serve. My suggestion, get there early. For the other broadcasters, and I've already talked to Walter and Baseball Nut 24, get your spot early. With the changes surrounding the network, etc. You'll need to set up and do some testing.

I'm amazed that a division I arena would only have 16 spots for media. Municipal Auditorium in Nashville is just a level above a dump...and they get 75 or more in there (on the court).

As defined many posts ago I am simply collateral damage. No passes here and I will miss my first game of Regional play tonight since the event moved to the BOK. I will attend quite a few games but tonight just seems a good one to avoid on principle.

Truly a shame but I do not blame you one bit paNDA. I know that my entire family has enjoyed the countless pictures you have taken while my sons have played in various sporting events at Cov Cath. You have taken some really good ones, that we have then had made into calendars and photo albums by Shutterfly. I can also tell you that these pictures are treasured greatly, as I learned long ago that I am not a good photog, and, I find that I can not hold the dang camera still while watching and cheering during the sporting events (as evidenced by the videos where I only get half the action and the other half is the floor, ceiling, walls, etc) So, once again - Thanks for all you have provided my family, as well as countless other families as their kids have participated in high school athletics!

Count me in the group that is failing to see the problem. The real issue that I do see is determining who "deserves" media credentials and who doesn't. That is something that I guess would be established by each venue. With absolutely no disrespect meant to anyone on here, just because you have a camera and/or a .com, doesn't automatically make you media, IMO.

I will say this, next year when the KHSAA rolls into town, the KHSAA will be the ones who determines who gets passes and who sits where, including the floor.
