It has to pass through the Mercer board yet, which it will. Them playing together next year as one team hasnt been penciled in, yet, but it will. The Mercerburg HogDawgs will be kicking off the 2006-2007 season together.

Again, the KHSAA may have something to say about it, especially if the schools remain separate.

Again, Don't you think that the head people Mercer/H'burg schools have looked into this?! Do you think they would have even considered merging this year if playing as one team wasnt going to be possible?! My logical answers to these questions are YES...and NO.

I hope athletics will help pull the two groups of students together. I get excited, not only about sports, but the possibility of community-wide unity that this could lead to. I'm not naive enough to think that there aren't surely some rough spots and tough roads ahead, but isn't it that way with anything worthwhile. Thank goodness that "the greatest generation" (the WW1 and WW2 generation of Americans) didn't cower from a little adversity in order to achieve a greater good!

 

Some people think of the merger only in terms of what might be lost or what might go wrong. I attended Harrodsburg schools myself. Now, as a parent of two children who will be in the Mercer School system next year and a teacher in the Mercer system, I welcome our friends from Harrodsburg. I look forward to more scenes of H-burg and Mercer students and athletes working together for common goals.

 

This issue is far bigger than just athletics. However, I can't help but hope that the same phenomenon that was dramatized in the movie "Remember the Titans" occurs here in our community as athletics helps break down barriers and bring two groups of kids together in unity and mutual respect.

The KHSAA doesn't have to approve it. The KY state board of education is the only body that can say if they can or can't merge.

He was referring to the idea that two separate schools can compete under the banner of one athletic program, not whether the systems can merge.

With normal growth or decline, sure ... but this is the first time in years that two established programs have combined in the middle of a two-year contract cycle and given the new school a sizable enrollment average.

What was Boyle Co. enrolement the last year they won 2A? Before jumping to 3A. I'll bet it was close to what Mercerburg will be this upcoming season. One of the Mercer coaches told me that they would play 2a for one more season. Sundays Advocate Messenger artcle sure seems to support this as well. Doesn't really matter though they will still have to get it done on the field. There are many schools with a larger enrolement that could not win 2A however, because many see Mercerburg as a serious threat next season enrolement is a big issue.
