Mercer / Harrodsburg Consolidation

Featured Replies

I would have to disagree. I have no idea how good a combined team of Mercer and Harrodsburg will be this fall, and I'm the one that brought it up here. Regardless of how good the team is, Mercer will have an advantage over its district rivals, even if it's for just one year.

Here you go, again! haha. Mercer will have an advantage over its district rivals in numbers?!? Really? Say it aint so!! Big deal, it happens, they arent the first and sure as heck wont be the last..and like others have mentioned, if Mercer wasnt seen as a "threat" for the time being in 2-A, then mention of this wouldnt even be brought up. FACT!

I am assuming that Marty Jaggers will be the Head Coach. Will the Harrodsburg coaching staff be "merged" into the Mercer staff? Is there a plan, yet?

The article in the Advocate a few days ago made it sound like Jaggers is it. He spoke about what he was going to do to try and make the merger a smooth one.

You know I think you are taking Westsider all wrong. He could care less how the Mercerburg does he's just pointing out his observation about enrollment. I'm not sure why you seem so passionate about your rebuttals.

Personally I don't think enrollment is the issue for Mercer next year. What makes me feel good about their program is the talent that is coming back from Harrodsburg and Mercer and how the two can fit together rather nicely to make a serious run and threat for the AA title.

I hope the merger goes well and they will be knocking on the door this year. :thumb:

Do you see the "haha's" after I made a comment?? Do you see the little bananna guy dancing and laughing at the end?? If so, and Im sure you did, then I would hope that you would tell that I'm posting these comments in a friendly, jokingly matter...passionate about the merger and how great it will be?! Yes, I am...These posts, for me, are just for kicks, nothing taken TOO seriously here..I can promise you that :thumb:

..and Im with you about the hopes of the programs fitting together and making a run at the title!! It should be fun! :dancingpa :ylsuper:

If any coach can do it it will be Jaggers. Although as a senior parent this year I'm just glad my son won't have to play through it state champion or not.

Although I believe that Coach Jaggers will do a great job in acclimating the kids to each other, ... I am not a fan of having kids play on the same team while attending different schools. It impedes the relationship building process IMHO. Letcher Central did it until their school was done, but I don't like it. I would rather see them come together as a team once they are actually students at the same school.

In the long run, I think this will make Mercer consolidated a very powerful program getting the best athletes from all over the county. The staff has too be excited about that aspect of this. But it may take a little while to bring everyone together.

How can they remain 2A with 3A numbers?

How can they remain 2A with 3A numbers?

Simple. The Khsaa cannot change anyone's classification in the middle of a 2 year cycle. The redistricting runs on 4 year basis but if a school has a signifigant enrollment change after 2 years in the middle of the 4 year cycle then they can go up based on the numbers. In this case it is a matter of timing. The Mercerburg administration did it perferct as far as timing goes. There is no way their classification can change until after next season. That is why i have been posting responses to those saying that this wasn't well planned. Brother this has been in the (unofficial) works since Jaggers was approached to take over Mercer. This is great for the HogDog's!! I couldn't be more happy for Marty and his staff as well as the Mercerburg kids. :dancingpa

I've caually followed this thread and glanced back at some of your posts to try & get the proper background on your statement - but forgive me if I missed something or misread anything.

It sounds like you are saying that the administration did this on the schedule they did specifically with the intent of avoiding a reclassification at the time of consolidation and basically to gain the benefit of the extra numbers in athletic competitions for a year (or until reclassification is due?).

Theres nothing wrong with folks being excited about a consolidation - it certainly beats the alternative we have occasionally seen:creepy:, but a rather strong indifference to the academic component of this process in favor of how it can be maximized athletically doesnt put everyone in a very good light IMO.

If the choiced is to keep students apart academically and unite the athletic teams a year early to gain an advantage before reclassification, that "seems" to give everyone a particular impression - and not a good one.

I'm guessing that other 2A schools will not hold you guys in high esteem ???

So you're saying that the Mercer County administration deliberately waited until recently to announce the merger so they could gain an advantage ... and this is all about academics, huh?

I've looked back in this thread and I have yet to see anyone say that the merger was not well-planned.

Another unbiased source of information ...

I don't work for Mercer county. I don't live in Mercer County. I only know what my common sense tells me. But i want it to be clear that since you don't know me you shouldn't assume what i know or who i know. I don't think Mercer is consolidating with Harrodsburg only for athletics. But as i have said before it is exciting for those involved in the athletics. Not only football but all sports. If you want to see Mercer in a 'bad light' that is up to you. I choose not to see it that way. By the way i did not say they did this to avoid the classification issue. It might have sounded that way. I am only saying it was good timing in that aspect. Maybe merging athletic teams at first is part of a plan to slowly bring the kids together. Maybe that is the plan. I don't know this i am only analyzing it like everyone else. As i said earlier there might be more of a plan than we all actually know.

I don't think when the Superintendent at Harrodsburg retired a while back he decided to set his retirement date based on what class the merged athletic teams would fall under. Regardless i could care less what esteem the other 2A schools hold Mercer in and i bet they don't either. The schools didn't merge to make the rest of the state happy. They merged to improve their kids opportunities on the athletic fields and in the classroom. It is a done deal so get over it. How about something positive about the merger and drop the negative? Of course this is not directed at you personally since i don't know who you are;so remeber this is just all my opinion and thoughts by an outsider. Have a nice day!:thumb: :dancingpa

Not the case. Mike Check was correct in saying that this was in the plans before and when Jaggers took the job, it's actually been in the works, well talks of it happenin for 20+ years...I can promise you that Mike Check didnt mean what you think it might have sounded like in his post.Iit just so happens that this was the year for it to finally happen, a year shy of class realignment. But, if you (Im not saying you do) or others happen to think that this merger was planned in part of giving the Mercer County football team the benefit of playing with bigger numbers of their 2-A counterparts, then you couldnt be farther from the truth. No fault in being curious or questioning this, though.. :thumb:

One more thing. It has been indicated in this thread that this may not be well planned timed etc. Look a little harder. Also, since Harrodsburg had to vote on the measure to consolidate first and then go to the Mercer board i don't see how common sense would allow anyone to think Mercer has had complete control over the merger situation. It is a matter of good timing (by coincedince) i might ad. So no i am not saying the Mercer deiliberately waited to announce this. They had no idea that Harrodsburg would go this route this year. Either way go Mercerburg:thumb:

Mike,

Wow what is the problem here? My very 1st sentence should have clarified things for anyone who read it. I was simply making an observation - theres no need to take it as an attack.

You have made many, many posts on this matter which are presented as basically factual and you have repeatedly been rather dismissive and/or sarcastic of others comments at times IMO. You have plainly presented yourself as a big fan of Mercer so to now make a special point that you don't live or work in Mercer gives an appearance of playing both sides of the discussion. You can admit to being a big fan - its OK :thumb:

I think unbiased others reading the thrad could reasonably ask about the possibility of "taking advantage of the numbers for a year". It's not hating Mercer - I dont know or care about Mercer, it's just a question about the scenario presented on here.

Also, you did state you didnt care about the academics - that was one of my main points.
