No law requires that every person working gets drug tested. Your employer decides. The issue is that the government is deciding who warrants drug testing and who doesn't.

 

The government is the welfare recipients employer by default.

 

Amazes me how some people want no limits placed on those that are receiving money gleaned from out taxes. I'm all for helping those that need it. Welfare was never meant to be a way of life.

I'm drug tested in order to be able receive a check from my employer, what's the big deal about drug testing welfare recipients? Those opposed to it are the ones making a big deal out of it IMO.

I hadn't made that connection but it makes perfect sense.

I have no way of proving it of course, but I've heard this brought up in several casual conversation about the heroin epidemic we are facing. I personally feel like there is a correlations between heroin use and this bill.

 

I had a Level 3 ankle sprain, couldn't walk without a boot for weeks was in total pain. I was shocked when they wouldn't prescribe me a strong pain pill like oxycotin.

Not when there aren't any jobs available to be had, and the outlook doesn't look too good.

 

There are plenty of jobs if you are willing to study a STEM curriculum. The problem is that so many youth want an easy path out of college and end up with degrees and education that is not in demand in the marketplace. Health care and technology are begging for people.

I have read several articles stating that we are nearing a critical shortage of welders, pipe fitters, plumbers, etc. No one wants to do these jobs anymore. You can make more money with a master welder or master plumber license than you ever will with most liberal arts degrees and be able to find a job.

And this is where the Obama proposal for publicly funded community college education ties in. That is where you can learn the trade skills that have relevance in the marketplace.

 

Most 4 year College curriculums are taught with english challenged foreign graduate students who are paid next to nothing, while students are accumulating 5 and even 6 figure debt. You have to be very selective regarding what school you attend and what you choose as a major. 4 year college is not fr everybody , either.

I am not getting in to my thoughts on the subject, but if that low of a percentage of people are using drugs then we can safely say the "war on drugs" officially worked. And we all know it didn't...

Me! It's a complete waste of money. Government programs as a whole need to be stopped. I'm of the belief that if you want or need something, you pay for it. If you can't afford to pay for it, you work and save money until you can.

I'm surprised that no one in this thread has hit upon the primary issue with the conclusion drawn in the article.

 

The stats in that drug testing program are probably correct. I don't have any reason to doubt them.

 

The conclusion, however, is based on one big piece of data we don't have.

 

How many drug users simply didn't apply for the welfare because they knew they would test positive?

 

Come on guys. We can't draw any real conclusion from the data without that information.

 

Or maybe we can....can we assume that the drug testing program is working the way the designers want...keep drug users out??

I would be interested in knowing when these recipients are tested. If they are tested when they apply for welfare or each month, or when? It's pretty easy to pass a test if you know when you are going to be tested. If you are going to test then it should be random tests that can happen anytime.

Government just needs to ignore some HIPAA privacy laws (since they do that as part of ACA) and we can all know.

Well, it seems the wrong people are getting uptight about it. A drug screening costs what, about $100?And if you're only busting 40 people out of 16K, well, that's a really stupid waste of money just to test a theory.
