No pay shoveling snow...feel bad for the kid

Featured Replies

So my girl friends middle daughter has a buddy who's place of employment has been closed due to the weather for a couple of days. He's a young kid, early 20's with 2 small kids and another on the way, so he was advertising locally for snow removal trying to make a little money while out of work. $20-25.00 a drive way (depending on size) and FREE for any elderly people. He got 30 calls yesterday, and cleared 30 drive ways...all elderly people. And yes, it was free, he didn't charge any of them...but not a single one of them offered to pay or tip him anything.

I'm sorry...but that's just rude in my opinion. You mean to say out of 30 households, at least 10 of them couldn't have offered him $10.00 for his effort? Or even a couple of them pay for a full service? I'm quite sure some of them probably didn't' have money to pay for this, so I can see some not able to offer anything. But come on, all of them?

I think he got used more than once yesterday, which seems to unfortunately happen a lot in todays society.

He sounds like a good guy. No way I would've done all 30 without any kind of compensation. Definitely agree, incredibly rude and just inconsiderate.

If I was incapacitated I would have given the guy a 10-spot at least.

Didn't pay? Was LawnBoy one of the 30? :)

Seriously, I agree, that it's not right. Maybe it's just me, but if I took him up on the "free" part, I would have asked something like: "How many driveways have you cleared? Making any money?" That would have opened up a conversation of how he has done X amount of driveways and so far have made no money. If it was me, even though its a great deed to do all this for free for those who can't do it themselves, 30 it too much to do for free, 10 is too much. After a few I would have somehow brought it up.

Wow, I'd sneak back over there at dusk with a 5 gallon bucket of warm water for their clear drivewys and dare one of those cheap convalescent bastards to come outside on those febrile hips.

Of course I'm kidding, but really that's pitiful.

I have him coming over to do mine after our 3-4 inches we got this morning. Going to give him more than he's asking so it will at least make up a little for not getting paid yesterday.

Set up a gofundme page, I'll donate.

Me too. I've been go-funding quite a few different things lately...I'll go-fund this! Set it up!

1) That's awesome that he shoveled that many driveways for the elderly even knowing he wasn't getting paid. Not sure I would have done 30. He sounds like a stand up guy.

2) The fact that not a single one of them paid him is ridiculous. I understand the ad said "free" but I would think some of them would throw some cash his way as a courtesy. Even it is just $5 or so. Shame on those that could afford to offer him something and still didn't.

It's a shame that out of that many he got nothing. You would think that some of them at least could have floated him something. Hopefully he gets a little love on the news or something so maybe people will go out of their way to call him up and ask him to do their driveway. For pay.

He may have been a stand up guy before shoveling 30 driveways but is probably pretty hunched over after shoveling driveways...

Pretty pathetic of the old folks. How can you let someone do something for you and not give them anything??

Had a huge 14 yr.old from around the corner knock on my door and say $10 for my driveway and sidewalk. I gave him $15, I just can't understand not getting anything out of 30 jobs. They must be really poor.
