It's been mentioned more than once to do a "gofundme" page and maybe it will raise a few bucks to help the young man out. I've never done this before. Anyone ever set one up or know how to do it?

I once did a side computer job for a guy in Latonia. Much older guy. Very interesting man. . Took his PC, b/c it needed parts and a bunch of stuff. Brought it back the next day, and he wrote me a check for my services. About an hour later I had a missed call from him and he said and I quote "I'm old, I shouldn't have to pay you (poop) for fixing my computer for me. I've called the bank and put a stop on the check. Thanks"

 

I literally couldn't believe it. I didn't even try to recoup it even though I had about $150 in parts in it, b/c it just wasn't worth it, but at the time I was a new dad, newly divorced, with NO money. So I feel this guys pain. Even if he offered it for free, that's not right.

 

I'm in a much better state now, I'd like to help him out.

I don't care how old this guy was he's still a 100% jerk. You're a better person than me. He would have paid me one way or the other whether he liked it or not.

Someone rang my doorbell Tuesday wanting to clean my driveway. I thanked them for stopping and asking but told the guy I was going to do it myself. However, my neighbor across the road got them to clean his. I later asked him what they charged and he said $50. He said they told him they had been busy all morning and had made over $500 (that was around noon) and still was going to work until dark.

 

So, by using the $50 amount they charged, the young man discussed in this thread would have earned $1500 for his work. And he ended up with zero. It's a shame that at least some didn't offer him at least $15 or $20, but he has learned a valuable lesson. Some people take advantage of kindness. Next time I wouldn't care what their age was, they'd have to fork over some greenbacks or wade in deep snow until it melted.

Senior citizens don't get it, its that simple. My daughter works 2 jobs as well as a part time student. She is a waitress, and they have a group of elderly who come in 2 times a week to eat breakfast. Their bill is usually around 60 dollars, and they always hand her 2 bucks and say "Thank you hun, your such a good lil waitress". They even ask for her as they are getting seated, but lately, her manager makes them switch ever so often, hahaha. The ironic part of all of this is, she is a CNA at a nursing home......................

I think some elderly people think we're still living a Great Depression. They remember the hard times when they were young and for whatever reason they can't, or won't, adjust.

My grandmother passed away at 94 in 1995. She thought a loaf of bread should cost 15 cents to the day she died. Didn't believe in banks and kept her money from a check she received each month pinned inside an apron that she wore all the time. She was born in Appalachia in 1901 and lived through some of the regions's toughest economic periods.

THIS is why I have no issue when some places have a mandatory tip added on, as far as I can see it's not too much either. If this happens if the service was good I would add more to it to bring it to 15% to 20%. But some places I have been to they told me up front they are waiving that fee, as they know that they would get it anyway, and actually more if the check is smaller.

Seriously, I agree, that it's not right. Maybe it's just me, but if I took him up on the "free" part, I would have asked something like: "How many driveways have you cleared? Making any money?" That would have opened up a conversation of how he has done X amount of driveways and so far have made no money. If it was me, even though its a great deed to do all this for free for those who can't do it themselves, 30 it too much to do for free, 10 is too much. After a few I would have somehow brought it up.

I went to Australia a few years ago. There, the servers are paid a bigger salary and tipping is not the norm. It was strange at first because we are so programmed to tip here.

That's terrible, the young man is a better person than I. I wouldn't have made it through the whole 30 with no pay.

 

Some of our worse customers are the elderly. We do have a few good ones though that actually give a bonus at the end of the cutting season. Some of the others are a pain in the rear, but I just smile about it and go on to the next lawn. It's easier to smile about it when your getting paid though.
