Was Dave Wirth fired, or did he resign?

Featured Replies

I agree, sad public school parents don't demand more.

Is this about wins or much more?

^ Thread way off track.

^ I think Coach Brossart would tell you (my opinion) he wasn't ready for all that comes with being the head coach at Covington Catholic.

Being a head coach of a major sport at CovCath is a big time job.

Agreed. Was not ready at that time.

With all that said, then you have to ask yourself, was it a good idea to get rid of Brossart? The end results were the same with both coaches and coaching staffs. Maybe they should have kept him longer than 2 years to see where the program went. He has been fairly successful at Dixie. Or was there underlying issues with Brossart? Have no idea.

I would probably say yes. I'm not going to argue between Wirth and Brossart now, But 09 Wirth was a big upgrade from Brossart 08. It really just seemed that Brossart was not ready at that time. He has come along way and is a much better coach today than we was then. That being said, he has not beaten Cov Cath since he has been at Dixie (assistant and Head Coach). A couple of those loses were blow outs. But the last two seasons, the game has been early in the season.

Maybe it's timeing. Coach B will be at Dixie after this past season as long as he likes. He has been just what Dixie needed.

Cov Cath should never lose to New Cath in football!

Easy there bigboy...the same could be said that CovCath should never lose to Beechwood and for that matter Highlands too correct?...

I think your point was because of shear numbers and I agree and its a good point, but to be fair to the Catholics from Newport the same proclamation could be made about those two teams from the Forts and how has that worked out for ya...:thumb:

Hire a good coach, get the parents and the PHM to leave him alone and you might get the shipped righted sooner than later...

Cov Cath should never lose to New Cath in football!

Then who should they lose to? No one? LOL. If you can't see that some of those games/teams that you listed as "bad loses" are very good programs, then no one can help you. But then you complain that CCH continues to schedule Ohio teams and go 0-7. So are you wanting CCH to create a schedule so they never lose a game?

You complain about CCH losing games to programs such as NCC, Beechwood? And Ryle wasn't bad in 2009, and then what totally discredits you is mentioning LexCath as a bad lose? They lost to Trinity that year by just 1 point. When was the last time CCH played Trinity?

It's great to have an attitude that you should win every game. But when you lose its sometimes therapeutic to realize that the other team was just better than you and just let it go, it will relieve a lot of your tension.

Top Ten Reason (not in order)

# 1 - Get along with Bob Rowe.

# 2 - Actually teach a class, class time is not film time.

# 3 - Treat the young men with respect and you will get respect in return.

# 4 - Don't hire your dad as an assistant.

# 5 - A Power Offense (strong running game) can win games (ask the NFL's Seahawks).

# 6 - Beat Highlands once in a while, never get beat by Beechwood or any team from Boone County.

# 7 - Stop scheduling GCL South teams.

# 8 - Play the back-ups when you are up or down at the end of the game (they deserve playing time).

# 9 - Freshman should NEVER play ahead of a upperclassmen - It fact freshman should NEVER dress varsity, you don't need them by the numbers or the talent.

# 10 - Stop applying at every job opening in Northern Kentucky (Dixie 2013, Ryle 2014, Boone 2015).

^ Your #6 and #7 are ridiculous. On one hand you suggest that CCH isn't good enough to play with any of the big GCL boys, not even one game a year. On the other hand you are overlooking any possible talent that Beechwood or a school from Boone County may have by saying a CCH should never lose to them, nice show of respect. If you are afraid of them, afraid that a lose to them would hurt your feelings, then stop scheduling them, run and find teams you know 100% that you can beat. :)

1- Wirth did get along with Bob, but the last couple years became a challenge in their relationship

2- not sure what this has to do with coaching- heck Ruthsatz currently barely teaches.

3- agree that this is the most critical element in coaching.

4- this is silly. Dave Wirth Sr is a terrific coach and person and the boys genuinely liked him. Successful examples all over of having fathers or sons on your staff

5- Yes- it can also get you beat. Ask Johnson Central. The spread works- ask Highlands. Please don't use the Seahawks as the example of a system a high school team could emulate.

6- sure the long time CCH alum hate getting beat by Highlands- but then, everyone has been getting beat by Highlands the last 8 years - should not be a criteria for hiring or firing. Likewise, declaring a loss to Beechwood or any team in Boone Co as a fireable excuse is likewise unreasonable and elitist.

7- why? If your perception is that we are so good that we should "never" lose to Beechwood or teams in Boone Co, who presents a challenge? You want your cake and eat it too.

8- agree with this

9- I agree that you don't need Frosh dressing for Varsity games till after Frosh season is over.

10- agree that the flirtatious became too much- even if not entirely true, Wirth had created the perception and reputation that he was looking. I don't know what the Dixie 2013 comment is about though. Dixie hasn't had an opening since Brossart took over.

You had me until #9. Never say never. Talent should always win over class status regardless of the school or the numbers. That doesn't mean you throw a freshman out there day one. The job and playing time should be the upperclassman's to lose and the freshman should have to earn their time on the field. As of the second part of #9 I couldn't disagree more. Asking your top freshmen to dress varsity regardless if they play or not is a good practice to have. It incentivizes those freshmen that have a desire to play varsity now or in the future. Even of they do not get any playing time it gives them the VALUABLE experience of being in that environment, especially on a Friday night in the playoffs at Johnson Central and Highlands. You have to be in uniform running on the field to truly experience those environments. You don't get the same experience in street clothes watching from the stands. If you do this with your top freshmen, the players you believe you'll be relying on in future years it helps desensitize them to those hostile environments and helps them focus on performing when you need them to perform and not be thinking about the craziness going on around them.

Guess I'll have to disagree with this. Holding aside the uber talented extremely rare Frosh (at a school the size of Cov Cath anyway) I do not agree to the notion that dressing them for every Varsity game is a good thing.

So before playing one snap as a Frosh, you are asked to also dress varsity- I would say in most cases this de- incentivizes the player. What more does he have to prove?

Secondly, it creates an unnecessary rift between his fellow classmates- ie: "Johnny hasn't played a snap with us, but he's playing varsity?" Hey they're kids and it's just human nature.

Thirdly, it's a grind - it can burn some kids out unwittingly. The honor you think you are bestowing upon them becomes a weight.

In my opinion, the varsity coach waits till the end of the Frosh season- meets with the Frosh coach and his assistants then rewards who he wants to reward by asking them to dress. THIS- in my opinion- incentivizes a kid to play his butt off his Frosh season so that he can be rewarded- if that's his goal. Usually by the time The Frosh season is over, there are one or two more regular season games left, plus the playoffs. Plenty of time to get them immersed in the Varsity "game day" experience.

This why I hate posting on blogs and would rather discuss most issues on here in person over a beer. I actually don't think we are disagreeing on this. Like I said before freshmen like anyone else should have to EARN their time on the field. Typically for freshmen I'll agree that is toward the end of the season and I agree with a lot of what you said. I coached many years in Ohio at the high school level and in all that time only saw one kid who started as a freshman beginning about the third regular season game. He went on to play at a major D1 national power and later helped win a Super Bowl. Freshmen like that only come along maybe once in a decade. That said I believe we see it the same way just writing it differently. Again, if we were talking over a beer and not over a blog this would have been a two minute conversation with an AMEN brother at the end.

Covington Catholic has never had one of those Freshmen. I don't know about the Bluebirds, little Colonels, or those Boone County teams. Class A schools are different as they simply need them due to enrollment.

Sam Flynn started as a freshmen. He tuned out to be pretty good.
