Top 5 in 3A

I understand your argument with all of the teams you have mentioned. In Lex Caths case I think you have to look at the programs that have beaten them out in the past. Highlands, Boyle, Danville, Cov Cath and Oldham in their prime is no shame. It just seems like you are negative on here a lot toward a lot of 3A teams. I do understand your points though. What team do you pull for usually?

CDS,

Come on, spit it out , do you have a team or are you just a habitual hater?

It seems that for you winning at least 1 game every year in the playoffs means a team is not competitive - is that a correct read of your opinion?

(If 2 of those 7 victories were over losing records, that probably means Ashland was competitive enough to earn the higher seed - right?)

Are you saying that losing to Rock last year was a disgrace? Do you think Rock is not competitive b/c they lost to LexCath?

Are you saying that losing to Bell Co the year before that is a sign of a uncompetitive team?

Are you saying that losing to Mason Co before that is a sign of an uncompetitive program?

How about Hoptown. Are you saying they are not competitive also? They have a pretty strong program if you ask most folks.

Bowling Green hasnt had a lot of luck winning championships. Are they not competitive enough for you?

Those are all good, competitive programs. Where do YOU draw the line? Just give us something to go on here so we can gauge the seriousness of your argument

Rock and Bell have one thing going for them that the others do not that are listed amongst the top 5 with them such as Highlands-Lexington Catholic-Covington Catholic. The semi's is played on grass this year whomever comes out of that region.

that the game is played on "grass" if it is played on log mountain. Usually when quicker teams from up north visit around playoff time, the grass is gone, replaced by several inches of good ol Bell County mud. Funny weather they have down there. Or is Log mountain built on a natural spring that always seems to overflow in November?

I think that the muddy field excuse is often overused and is just an EXCUSE expressed by outsiders. Seriously how many programs do you think has a coach that tells his coaching staff to get the field as wet and muddy as possible in order to give themslef a better chance?

The fact is, that in Eastern Kentucky, to whom you are referring suffer from lack of facilities. Often there isn't a businessman/woman or grant to fund a school a new $500,000 turf field. Also, these rural schools have 1 field in which to play/practice on and sometimes that may also include the little league teams, you'd be surprised how much damage 7-8 year olds can make when there are about 5 games played the field back to back.

I just get sick and tired of people saying that we Eastern Kentucky FOLK simply water the field down to eliminate the Northerns speed.

By the way, why woudl Bell County want to eliminate their speed? They were probably faster than HHS in 04'. Secondly, why would they waste money to buy a tarp to cover the field if they wanted to just water it down.

It does rain and the elevations in the mountains are HIGHER, therefore making it more damp and wet, especially at night.

Say that Bell County admitted to watering their field down, who are you or anyone else to say that is wrong. It is their field and it is their homefield advantage. So why would it be so wrong if they wanted to. It is simply your word against theirs saying it is either right or wrong.

In 04 Highlands overall team speed was probably the best in the state....Just ask Boyle County...:D :D

I was a part of those games in the early 90's. WE NEVER WATERED DOWN THE FIELD! I always hear this crap. It rains in November in EKY or snows. Why is that so tough to believe? We played in a game up North(I will not mention the name of the school)that was a lot worse than the events at Bell, and we never accused anyone. Let it go, you only degrade yourselves with this useless garbage.

I was about to say the same thing. :thumb:

That isn't to say that Bell County wasn't JUST AS FAST. Their overall team speed was overlooked until after the after the game by many Bluebirds. Then they realized how quick they really were.

So many folks just need to look for an excuse.

Ashland's team last year was extremely speed based at most positions.

A late season game was played where it rained during the day the another storm hit just as the game started. The other coach questioned if we had watered the field down ahead of time.

What a joke

We have played several playoff games in the mud at Cov Cath & didn't use that as an excuse for getting thumped.

I hope the fans will be able to see a great "DRY" field the night Ashland comes to Johnson Central. I like it when both teams have the same odds in winning. Home field advantage just sounds real good this year. Cheerio :thumb:

If it rained, wouldn't both teams still have the same odds in winning? I mean both teams have to play in the rain, or both teams have to play in the dry grass. It is equal.

Have to respectfully disagree with you 3wishes based on my playing experience. Much like playing in a windstorm hinders a passing team more than it does a running team, playing in the mud hinders a team that runs the corners and needs to cut upfield more than it does a team with a straight ahead running game. Likewise, an offense that utilizes straight ahead blocking schemes is not as hindered by the mud than a team that traps and pulls a lot is. Finally, a defensive line that is small but quick that utilizes a lot of stunts to get separation from the o line loses a lot in the mud, whereas a big powerful d line may actually benefit in the mud (its tough to get low and drive the big linemen off the ball, when you can't get any drive traction).

While I hear what you are saying and both teams play in it, if the two teams have dramatically different types of play and players, the mud will affect one team more than the other based on my experiences.

Great points LN,

Thats why I've always loved a diversified approach.

I'm sure all coaches would like to have enough talent to do everything well but Ive seen quite a few that have one "style" or approach year after year.

HS is not like college or pros where you go out and pick players for your style of play.

The truely great coaches adapt their style to their players. We've all seen those great coaches :thumb:

Cheers, Woody Jr

LN - While you make an argument for the teams that are fast and speedy and are less fortunate to play on muddy fields, you are contradicting yourself because the same can be said about a slow team, that plays on a fast turf field. That is where homefield advantage plays a role. Neither team is always going to be equal, therfore one will always be limited or have the odds stacked against them. Was it fair that Rockcastle County had to play Lexington Catholic on turf? Catholic was much faster and had many more men contribute, yet it was fair because it was their homefield. Since Catholic created the opportunity for themselves to have that type of playing surface would it also not be fair for Dudley Hilton at Bell County to turn the sprinklers on and create his own type of field? I say yes it is fair. I'll agree to disagree with you.:thumb: Like Woody said earlier, it is about adapting, how good is your coach and can they adapt to the situation that is presented before them. Unlike the windstorm that you so elaborated on, that is a factor that cannot be deviated, therfore, it has no significance in this debate.

Rock also knew they were playing on turf. If the fields are going to be watered down will a memo be sent out to let the other teams know? I think the whole watered down thing is another one of those things that get blown out of porpotion by the way.
