On the verge: Boyle Co, Covington Catholic

The top programs are at it again, and it is shaping up to be a great season. I can't wait!!

The Purples lost some beef up front, but they still can flood the field with stellar players, such as senior T Stuart Hines, a unanimous First Team All State selection last season and could quite possibly be KY's best this fall. Senior Avery Hibbitt returns to add to his team career scoring record and become the best the school's ever seen in rushing yards as well. He enters 2006 as one of the most mentioned names for Mr Football this fall. This HB isn't all that's in the offensive backfield either, as several young men are vying for the other two spots. We were pleased beyond description with the output of the two soph QBs last year...I don't know which, but Kevin Wallace said that he'll pick one full-time QB and make sure that the other QB gets plenty of time at another position as both QBs, Rondale McMillian and Trent Steelman, are excellent athletes. There are four more third-year starters coming back on a defense that gave up 81, 91, and 105 points in the last three years. OLB Jeremy Mitchell, ILBs Tucker Jackson and Chris Tucker, and DB Ryan Beard should be ready for outstanding senior years. The Purples' reserves saw plenty of action last season on a team that recorded a school record eight shutouts (seven in a row). K Casey Tinius should be one of the best place kickers in the state if not the best this fall. He hasn't nailed a FG from 50+ yards yet, but his time is coming! Hines, Hibbitt, and Jackson should be the most heavily recruited players from this team.

Nothing is a shoo-in in the postseason. It should be BGHS and Hoptown again this fall, this time at Donaldson Stadium/Beard Field. We could have another game like last season, a 3-0 Purples win in one of the classic games of this long time series that started in 1927. I don't know much about Region Two, but I figure that Boyle Co is as good a guess as anybody.

Best of luck to everybody this fall!!:D

Arrrrgh :irked: Yeah, we shut down that big passing game all game long then coach Ray called a a draw play in OT that just killed us. It was an incredibly tough loss but I think it was the fire that led to the state championship in 1990  The only (-) about 90 was that Bell beat you guys before we could get to you (not saying we definitely would have beat ya, but we were awfully strong). Then in '91 at your place C. Hutt(RB) was smokin you guys in the 1st quarter (I think we had 3 TD's?) but he got a bad stinger? and they had him on a board & in the ambulance before our coaches knew what was happening. The ballon was popped as he went of to the ER.

The CovCath OT 17 - 10 loss to Bell in 90 at the Hilton Hotel was a tough one. It was cold, rainy, and muddy as it always seems to be in Bell County that time of year and the game was a defensive battle. I still think the CovCath running back got into the endzone in OT (it was on 4th down), but what can you do. A CovCath Ashland game in 1990 would have been a good one. Nothing but respect for a very tough Tomcat program.

No respect for jc

Come on now. We're just reminiscing about a few of the incredibly hard fought playoff games in our long histories.

Thats how it works when 2 programs respect each other [these were gut wrenching season ending games that could have turned on any one play, mistake, OR officials call] and you don't see either one of us crying, whining or complaining about getting cheated, do you?

Unfortunately everyone isnt like that

JC fans have been demanding respect since last year. Respect isn't givin, it is earned. JC had a solid team last year, and still return some very good players, but one and done in the playoffs doesnt cut it.

If nothing else respect will be earned by JC when the Tomcats lose on the Eagle field this fall.

They would had went further than that if it was for the "missed fg " at Ashland last year.

So are you still infering that the field goal was made?

When was the last time Johnson Central won a playoff game? Johnson Central has done nothing to gain anyone's respect and for that matter Ashland isn't far ahead of them.

Dear CdS,

Ashland has been rather competitive playoff wise.

Perhaps you could share with us which team/fan(s) have a perverted view of good programs?

Cheers, Woody Jr

Competitive playoff wise? Ashland has won 7 playoff games the past 5 years. Of those 7 wins, only 2 have come against teams with a winning record (8-4 Rockcastle in '04 and 6-5 Clay Co. in '05) The Tomcats have dominated Cawood and Perry Central though.....accounting for 4 of their 7 playoff victories the past 5 years. I do not consider that "competitive playoff wise". It is ahead of Johnson Central however.

CdS,

Since I'm dealing with someone who apparently has the working memory of a 5yr old, I guess we'll just have to try & go further in the playoffs from now on to conform to your opinion of what competitive is.

You did fail to qualify what you consider competitive; perhaps it's ONLY the teams that win the final game? or perhaps it happens to be a school you support that just happens to have advanced further in the last 5 years?

You can go ahead and reveal the truth - it won't hurt:p

Woody Jr

CDS also dogged Lex Cath all the way to the championship. There wasn't much to dog after that! Who is your team CDS? Perhaps that will tell why there is so much bitterness toward the 3A teams that you take shots at on here:)

I am not dogging Ashland, i'm just trying to give a statistical alternative view to Ashland being competitive in the playoffs as woody stated. Based on the past 5 years, I don't think they have been. I had no faith in Lex Cath prior to this year because their track record was similar to that of Ashland. Afterall, prior to 2005 the Knights had never won a regional championship, much less a state championship. They had several very good teams too. Can you really argue that Stick?
