I am a huge fan of old movies so it's going to be very hard for me to like any remake better than the original.

Is Manchurian Candidate with Denzel Washington better than the original? I enjoyed the newer one, but never saw the first.

 

I like Denzel's way more than the original, good call.

It has come to my attention that "The Birdcage" is actually a remake (of sorts) of "La Cage Aux Folles", and if that is the case and was the intention, than "The Birdcage" should top this list.

 

If it is a remake of a foreign film, like I believe this one is, then it doesn't really qualify as a remake IMO.

 

A couple of the ones listed, like The Fly, it is easy to say it is better because movies are just better made today with better technology. I am not sure I would say the remake of The Fly is better other than better technology. It has been a long time since I saw the original Ocean's 11, but I suspect that may be the case with that movie also.

 

As to Sandman's comment on Willie Wonka, his judgment on this topic loses all credibility. That Depp remake was a disaster and the original is excellent.

Originally came out as a French film Le Dîner de Cons (Dinner of Fools) in 1998. It may well be just as funny as the American version, but I think, for me at least, the humor was lost in translation...or actually, lost in subtitles.

There's no contest between the original The Fly and the Jeff Goldblum version or between the original version of The Thing and the Kurt Russell version.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's a remake of the 1964 movie starring Marlon Brando and David Niven, Bedtime Story. Brando and Niven are both great in their own ways, but they just can't add up to Steve Martin and Michael Caine when it comes to comedy.

The Remake of Cape Fear if not better is just as good as the original.

The Gambler, with James Caan and not Kenny Rogers, was a dark movie. It appears this Marky Mark version will be more of an action movie. Not real excited to see it or compare it to the original, as they will not be similar movies.

I will agree with you on "Ocean's 11", I watched the original a few years ago, and I like the new one much better.
