Officials reportedly euthanize mountain lion found in Bourbon Co.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officials reportedly euthanized a mountain lion that was found in Bourbon County Monday afternoon.

Officials told WKYT’s Sam Smith that a woman walking her dog in Bourbon County spotted the mountain lion. The dog might have spooked the mountain lion, which went into a tree.

The woman called animal control, but officials there told her “that's more than what we can handle, you need to call fish and wildlife."

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife euthanized the cat. No one was injured. The cat’s body is supposed to arrive in Frankfort later Tuesday for a necropsy.

Mountain lions are rare in Kentucky. Officials think it was a caged pet that got loose.

I wonder if they'll catch the person who "owned" this mountain lion?

100% agree.

That is a large animal.

They didn't give a reason why it was euthanized. Is there any wonder?

Previous owner asked in her will it be put down after her death.

What should they have done with a mountain lion on the loose in rural KY?

On this one, I would have to agree. What else would you do with it?

Here was the explanation posted in an article on WKYT

"Kentucky Fish and Wildlife program coordinator Steven Dobey said officers had to shoot the mountain lion because they didn't have tranquilizers with them. He said it was nearly dark and if they waited for someone to bring them tranquilizers, the animal could have gotten away and posed a danger to the public."

Wildlife officials kill mountain lion found in Bourbon Co.

There are people outraged that they killed the thing... I'm having a hard time understanding why. If it snatched someone's kid up, the same people would be screaming for how Fish and Wildlife should have killed it before it hurt someone.

There are 700 comments under one of those articles (WYMT or LEX18). Everyone is outraged. I don't get it. Do you really want a giant mountain lion running around your homes?

Agreed, I hate to see it killed. But better the cat than someone else or even a child.

The shame of it is that people are allowed to own Big Cats at all...just pure Vanity IMO.

I'm not sure they are allowed to own one.

I'm not sure they are allowed to own one.
The article said you cannot own one in KY after 2005, but that some owners were grandfathered in at that time.

So the new term for shooting is euthanize?
