Trinity 47 Dixie Heights 14 (Class 6A State Championship)

I'm a bit new to the sport, and thus curious as to this discussion. Is there an established etiquette (or unwritten rule) to when the team that started a running clock puts in their second string and what the other teams response should be?

Or is it more of a 'do what you want' situation for both teams?

For me as a coach it's a safety issue. I want to sub as many kids as I can and get them all playing time but I don't want to put in my 3rd and 4th team if the other squad is going to leave their starters in because my kids will possibly be miss matched.

Congrats Rocks on another big win in our program's history.

That's a good point, I guess it also depends on how comfortable you are with your subs if the other team is leaving their starters in

A lot of good answers from other BGPers already on your question but I'll add this: I think it depends on the situation. If this was a regular season game, I fully believe Coach Brossart would have subbed his starters out. But since it was the state title game and a majority of the starters are seniors, I think Coach Brossart wanted to give the seniors who helped turn the program around from where it was a few years ago the chance to finish the biggest game they (and the program) have played in their careers.

I am really not upset that DH starters scored on the T reserves. If you poll HS coaches, however, I think most would say that when the team leading pulls starters the correct thing to do is follow suit on the next series. In fact, the protocol is to pull offensive starters first and let the trailing team first team defense stop them (which happened). Slight breach of etiquette to not follow with all second stringers after that, compounded by throwing deep. Sorry, but a 94 yard passing TD and a 2-pt conversion against basically the JV guys are nothing to be proud of at that point. Be proud of your season? Absolutely!; be proud of your last series? Eh...

On a different note, thank goodness the 6A game was Saturday; I heard it was a yucky misty rain on Friday. And congrats to all of the state champs. August cannot come quickly enough to many BGPers! :thumb:

Congrats to the Shamrocks! Just keep getting it done! I hope you keep playing the tough nondistrict out of state schedule. I think that really prepared your team this year. Also congrats to Ryan Young.- Great to go out your senior year with a state championship!

And congrats to Dixie Heights! You guys made your trail this year where they have never been before! Great Season!

I have the right to ask a questions regarding the Dixie game philosophy. If the Dixie Heights players and parents are perfectly content to have only the starters appear in the state final, then so be it. Your coach is quoted in the Cincinnati paper and seemed to brag on the state final record TD completion and the positive rushing yardage gained versus Trinity in the final moments.....

Let it go for God sakes! Your school has hoisted the trophy 23 times, a HELL of an accomplishment. Should you really care was the loosing team does? Jeeezus.

Congrats Dixie on a very successful season! I enjoyed every game.

And congrats to Drew Moore for setting that record! I don't care who Trinity had in or not, they couldn't stop an amazing play that will be in the record books forever!

IMO, Moore was the best player on the field. In fact, if you would have had Moore play QB for T and the other QB play for Dixie, them the score would have even been worse.

Wrong on all points.

Congrats to the Rocks! You guys played a great game, and as many posters had eluded too, were more prepared for the game than we were due to scheduling. We competed, but didn't execute in a fashion that would have led to a different outcome. There is no shame in this loss. I'm proud of our kids and how hard they fought all season. One game does not change my opinion. The Rocks converted several plays into game changers that by all rights should have never been but due to the courageous efforts of their QB and players.

I hope to see you all again when we ping pong back into 6A in a few seasons. Until then Good Luck and God Bless.

I would disagree. Moore was certainly the better rusher, no doubt about that. However, Ryan Young completed far more passes and showed a greater ability to pass (thinking specifically of the shovel pass while he was being sacked). Moore's only significant pass came against Trinity's second string after failing to connect many times against the first string defense. Young threw completions all night long against Dixie Height's defense, and made several big plays.

Moore is the better rusher.

Young is the better passer.

I'd call these quarterbacks about even. They are both strong, just in different ways.

Congrats to Dixie and to the Shamrocks on great seasons. To Dixie, tough to beat a 12A school.

You're a funny guy. Tell me, how many Trinity seniors on this team have D1 football offers? Or can expect to get one?

But you may be right about 12A in another sense: 12A coaches. You need that to win a title with a 5-loss team.

NOW you learned what i was talking about with the "roadblock" all the other 6A nky teams have faced

I see a few of the posts are beginning to turn it into a public/private kinda thing so here is my 2cents (coming from a public school guy)

Enrollment numbers of males can @ times play a role in the performance of a team, but there are exceptions to this rule. Here is a quick rundown of some of the male enrollment numbers (this info is readily available to the public on the KHSAA website)

School #males record

St. X 1347 (8-5)

Trinity 1269 (10-5)

Scott Co. 1243 (10-2)

Dunbar 1133 (4-7)

Henry Clay 1180 (7-3)

Eastern 1087 (2-9)

Lafayette 1005 (8-4)

Henderson Co. 961 (5-6)

Ballard 944 (10-4)

Tates Creek 933 (3-8)

Simon Kenton 903 (11-2)

Bryan Station 895 (7-5)

Meade Co 832 (11-3)

Male 782 (11-1)

Manual 769 (8-4)

Dixie Heights 746 (13-2)

Boone Co. 697 (1-10)

Southern 653 (2-9)

It just isn't that there are a large amount of male students enrolled in a school that translates to great performance on the football field unfortunately, if that was the case then Dunbar would be neck & neck with Scott Co or Henry Clay every year & that hasn't been the case since the late 90's thru the early to mid 2000's. Heck no Lexington team has come close to taking Scott Co. down from the throne that they have held onto for my recent memory, sure Station beat them this year & Lafayette played them close, but is that going to be a year in, year out kind of thing, certainly not. The idea that if a school is big & there are athletes out roaming the halls couldn't be further from the truth in my book.

The difference is that students that have the choice to attend a private school & have the desire to play for one of the private schools do exactly that rather than living in an attendance area & being told which high school you are to attend unless you attend out of your area in an academic program & play athletics @ the school as well. Some choose by heritage where the family has had generations of the family attend that school & I respect that tradition 100%.

In regards to that there is really nothing to do about it, you either get good, or get whipped the way I see it. You could transplant the best coaching staff from any school USA into a school that has achieved poorly on the field & if there isn't a decent pool of athletes to choose from (no matter the size of the student population) you will have a good coaching staff & a well coached, but not a championship caliber team.
