Rules Reminders For Fans

Featured Replies

It's that time of year again. Figured it would be beneficial to remind fans of some of the common rules they often do not understand.

1. You can NOT travel if you bobble the ball. It is impossible to travel if you do not have the ball in your hands. You cannot travel while dribbling either.

2. It is NOT a T nor basket interference if a defender slaps the backboard while trying to block a shot. That's true EVEN if the ball is on the rim or in the cylinder.

3. A defender deflecting the ball does not by itself negate a backcourt violation ie "over and back." If a defender bats the ball and it hits the offensive player before going into the backcourt and then the offensive player is first to touch it is a violation. Do not yell "he tipped it" or give the universal "tipped it" sign.

4. A player does NOT have to get two feet back inbounds before touching a ball. You're either touching OOB or you're not. Note also that if airborne when you touch the ball you are considered to be where you last were touching the ground.

5. Starting this season players on the FT lane can enter on the release instead of having to wait for the ball to hit the rim or backboard.

6. It is NOT always a foul when a player gets a rebound or taps the ball when he is behind a player from the other team. So don't yell "over the back" every time.

7. A defender can be moving and it still be a "charge" on the offensive player.

I am sure there are more but I figured that would be a good place to start.

You forgot that if you get whistled for throwing an elbow, it is a violation and not a foul.

"Over the back" requires a push.

Also, nowhere in the rule book does it say that teams must have an equal number of fouls throughout the game.

Good get.

I say this every year, but 2 needs to change.

If a defender causes the ball to miss by hitting the backboard/shaking the goal, it should be basket interference.

Clyde, I thought they changed rule number 4 above? Or am I thinking in reference of calling time outs when you are in the air. I thought I remember reading when you are in the air and go out of bonds and try to call time out they are not granting that time out. Am I correct or am I totally wrong and seeing things? Lol, it is possible for that to happen when you get my age!!

I believe college implemented a rule that you cannot get a TO if you're in the air going OOB.

I think #2 happened against Boyle County in a scrimmage.

Happened and wasn't called? Or was called?

It is a T if the official thinks there was no legit attempt to block the shot. However, it's never basket interference even if it's a T.
