Not all touches are fouls. The POE is to keep dribblers from getting pushed or have their direction changed. Unless there is a push while the player is shooting it's not a foul. Didn't cause him to change direction. Didn't stop him from gaining ground.

 

The phrase "gaining an advantage" comes to mind.

Here's one I blew my first year. Knew the rule but whistle was faster than my brain.

 

On a throw-in it is NOT illegal to stop ON the line. It's only a violation when your foot touches the inbounds area of the floor.

Last night our freshmen played a freshman/JV doubleheader. The officials made it clear that they were acknowledging the point of emphasis of no hands on the offensive player while playing defense and they called that all night. Our freshman coach reminded our kids of that throughout the night and our boys adjusted appropriately. My question is this: kids from both teams were getting fouled while shooting. How come you can't put one hand on the offensive player at anytime but you can put a hand on them when shooting and not get called for anything? And that happened for both teams. Seems like the point of emphasis should still be emphasized at all times and not just 30 feet away from the basket.

 

This drives me nuts, you can't touch 30 feet from the goal but you can hammer someone when they shoot.

both of your feet and the ball have to be over. You can legally step back and forth with one foot or dribble the ball back and forth over the timeline and it not be over and back.

To be clear, when you say BOTH feet AND the ball have to over you mean DURING a dribble.

BY RULE the 3 second count is suspended when a player who was in the lane while the official was counting receives the pass. If the player then makes a move to shoot the ball it is not 3 seconds. If he does not and, say, passes it back out the 3 second count RESUMES from where it left off.

 

And, of course, the 3 second count stops on EVERY shot attempt.

You do not need both to start the count. If the foot is in the lane or on the lane you are IN the lane.
