Centralized Stadium for KHSAA state games

Featured Replies

Why not? It is centrally located, plenty of parking and lodging available. A renovation that will include box suites, turf, etc. What is the problem other than it won't be full?

One of the arguments about Papa John's Cardinal Stadium was that it's too big for the finals.

Commonwealth is much bigger than PJCS, so that should be a factor there, too.

Georgetown College, end of argument.

It's just not a realistic venture for the KHSAA to build their own facility.

  • They would have to come up with the capital to build a stadium from the ground up. I've built stadiums before. Completely developing a site from nothing into a stadium capable of holding 15,000 fans is easily going to break $15 million in cost.
  • That's not to mention the fact that the parking lot would realistically have to be MUCH larger than the average stadium's due to the "stay all day" mentality of the fans for football finals, as well as the amount of overlap parking you'll have to accommodate between games.
  • Also, those roads nearby better be able to handle the traffic load, or else nobody's getting anywhere on time. Take Collins, for example. I attended the Collins/Shelby County game this season. Collins has a very nice stadium. However, the road approaching the school and stadium is nowhere near functional for facilitating the traffic for a big game. I had to sit in almost 40 minutes of traffic to get in and out of the game...and I wasn't dealing with traffic for another game that was set to start 60 minutes later either. I'll bet the KHSAA would be looking at an easy $5 million+ in cost to get whatever roads upgraded in the vicinity local to the stadium.
  • How about the fact that the state would be looking at dumping tens of millions of dollars into a stadium that was only set for like 5 days of use each year, football an soccer combined? Think anyone would take exception to that? I sure do.
  • What about paying for upkeep and security year-round on a facility that is sitting unused an unoccupied 360 days of the year? That's gonna be pretty costly.
  • What about the manpower for the games? Who runs the box office? Who runs the concessions? Who runs security detail at the game? The benefit of being able to go to an existing stadium and write a check in order to have all of that taken care of for you is pretty darn valuable.

There's not a snowball's chance in hell of this happening. Too expensive and too much work for not that big of a benefit.

Not a bad idea! LOL

A "Meet in the Middle Game(s)" each week would be great...

Belfry and Mayfield

Bowling Green and Highlands

McCracken and Johnson Central

The list could go on and on...

Exactly!

100% agree this would end up being a drain on taxpayers. People in NKY are complaining about money for a bridge and people want the state to spend money on a little used stadium ?

Is McCracken down next year? That's the only way JC will schedule them. I'd include highlights but the DVD was blank.

To small.

Too big is a weak argument. They play high school playoff/championship games at the ATT Stadium in Dallas. No way a HS game is filling even the lower bowl. Most college games don't.

It is about the experience of the player, being on the big stage. Certainly more fans the merrier, but being on the field playing a game in a big time football program's field is part of the achievement of making it to the championship game.

In my opinion this is why WKU is not the best option, it's simply not a big time feel.

I completely agree that it won't be full. But once the renovation is done do you give up top level facilities, a central location, excellent parking, lodging etc.. For a stadium that is the "right size?"

I agree 100%

1. How about a 1 cent increase in school taxes to pay for a top of the line sports complex for all sports....Since I don't have kids in school and pay a school tax anyway might as well build a stadium that I would actually see what my $ are paying for..

2. As others have already suggested having the top teams play each other every week would create a bowl like atmosphere every week

3. Combine it with soccer that's boy/girl games being played same concept as above top teams playing

4. Could be used to play teams from out of state....All star games and so forth...

.01 Cent raise in school taxes across the state we could build our own Jerry World.

School tax rates is based on rate per $1,000 value of property. .01 Cent per $1,000 across the state would raise a ton of money in a very short time.

You could be onto something.
