Good question, I wasn't there and don't recall where the ball was spotted from the radio broadcasts. But if in fact that did happen, I suppose one of the referees had an outdated rulebook hah.

A FG in high school is a scrimmage kick, it becomes dead when it reaches the goal line. If the kick reaches the goal line and is no good, it is simply a touch back and the ball is placed at the 20 yard line. Just like both missed FG's last night. Pay attention and you will hear the whistle blow the play dead when the ball crosses the goal line. On a PAT you will hear the whistle blow the play dead at the kick.

 

If the ball doesn't reach the goal line it is essentially the same as a punt. It can be returned by the defense or downed by the kicking team.

That's an odd rule. With a rule like that if you cross the 50 you may as well kick a fg instead of punting.

 

That's true if you have a decent kicker and execute well in that facet of the game. (Remember we are talking HS and failure to execute can be disastrous) I recall a playoff game agianst HHS when Popham kicked for Covcath and they attempted several long FGs and although unsuccessful, ball moved forward to 20yd line so definitely worth the try!

You can also attempt the fg and if it goes out of bounds before it goes the goaline then the ball is placed where it went out of bounds. Some HS teams do this instead of punting. People get very confused between the four different versions of the rules there are for football. There are FED, modified NCAA, NCAA and NFL rules. Fans and coaches alike screw up rules all the time because they don't know there is a difference. As far as dumb rules go there are others that are worse than the FG rule.

Every village has their idiot, some villages are larger than others and are entitled to more idiots lol. Honestly I don't dislike any of the Highlands people and have a ton of respect for their program. With Highlands moving up to 5A I would love to see Ashland and Highlands play an out of district game each year, but doubt Highlands would have room on their schedule, nor may be interested. IMO, it would be great playoff prep for Ashland that just had a major roadblock removed for the future.

Ashland could be great next year, we will see. Gotta figure out a way to beat the fighting mattneys though, they have had our number lately, even though the teams seem tk be pretty even outside of that one game.

Columbus has a tough game next week against Coral Gables. Columbus won in the regular season 14-13. Beat Coral Gables--AGAIN

When Highlands missed the fg in the first half the line of scrimmage was the 31 and the ball was spotted on the 20. Why did Ashland coaches not question this?

 

I think if the kick crosses the goaline it is considered a touchback...and the ball is placed at the 20.

I'm really proud of how the Tomcats went on the road and made it a really close game. Hopefully this is a building block for next season.
