Ashland played very well. Defense forced HHS to punt at least the 1st 2 drives of the 2nd half. Baker got through the line and ran away from folks. He also had some good moves at the LOS that if he had some better holes to run through, could have resulted in nice gains. Also thought #32 for Ashland played well on both sides of the ball. Very fired up.

 

HHS was sloppy in execution. 2 drives inside the 5 stopped on fumbled snaps (1 under center on 4th down and 1 in shotgun). Another drive took 4th down to get the TD. Missed FG in 1st half of was poor execution getting close to make FG more reasonable. Last drive of the 1st half was poor execution of time management. Clock was wound after 1st down marked off (looked like it was OB to me, but zebra ruled forward progress). No reason for a shovel pass in the middle of the field on 1st down with no timeouts. Spike the ball and talk it over. If you are not sure you can score TD, kick the FG before half.

 

Need to be better in the next game. Hopefully they will be. Got to remember these are kids and not robots. They did enough to win and, ultimately, that is what matters at this time of year.

I Heard Ashland has pretty good Team speed.

Last thought and I will move on, the next 6 months are important for mine. Highlands did not pick up a first down in the third quarter. Good luck to Highlands and Cov Cath next week in the regional final. I hope it is as good of a game as last night was and I hope both teams stay injury free.

Funny about your "robots" quote. Could not be more true. Remember we are talking about 16 and 17 year olds here. A good friend of mine who has coached a lot at the HS age level once told me how he just laughs when people tell him they are surprised when a player or team screws up...he is more surprised when they don't and actually get it right...

 

Not all of us Doc...I came away impressed with Ashland last night. HHS did not play great but as I said before, Ashland had some say into why they did not play well.

Every village has their idiot, some villages are larger than others and are entitled to more idiots lol. Honestly I don't dislike any of the Highlands people and have a ton of respect for their program. With Highlands moving up to 5A I would love to see Ashland and Highlands play an out of district game each year, but doubt Highlands would have room on their schedule, nor may be interested. IMO, it would be great playoff prep for Ashland that just had a major roadblock removed for the future.

Not sure? These rules seem to change regularly and I'm not up on them, but I believe it should have been spotted at the line of scrimmage. I can't think of a reason why it would be moved back to the 20.

That's an odd rule. With a rule like that if you cross the 50 you may as well kick a fg instead of punting.
