That's not what I said. I just don't see them as a team that could win a state title. For instance, I have them ranked ahead of Owensboro, but I think the Red Devils have a better chance to win the state title. Similar theme with Holmes.

 

With that said, I probably wouldn't have thought CovCath would win last year either, and that was clearly wrong.

I think Owensboro can contend. With Holman and Miller inside, they will be real tough in the paint(i know they didnt exactly show it at Rupp last year). The x factor for the RedDevils will be guard play and depth. They have a sophmore point guard in Jacoby Harris who i expect will be much improved this season. They only lost their 6th man from the team that went to Rupp last season. Factor in the summer that Aric Holman had and I expect OHS to be very good in 2015.

 

I would throw Apollo in the mix for two reasons. #1 Eli Wright is one of the best players in the state of KY. #2 Steve Barker returning to Apollo to coach. Factor in their strong supporting cast and I look for big things from the Eagles this season.

I felt like Holman shut himself down by getting into foul trouble and eventually fouling out. I don't think he played more than 8-12 minutes the whole game.

The talent is there for them to make noise...consistency is what will determine how good they can be.

 

Bolden, McClendon, and Avery are good enough for them to beat most teams. They beat the 10th region favorite Camels by 25 at their place over the summer with both teams having their full roster and Booher subbing freely.

 

I guess we will know more after they play Scott Co Tues.

I do agree there. I more or less meant that I don't feel like anyone from Trinity influenced his poor game that night.

Yep. When he blew up this summer one of my comments on BGP was "he might have blown up sooner if anyone could have seen him on the floor for more than 5 minutes at the Sweet 16". Out of anywhere I watch a KY HS game, the Sweet 16 is one of the last places I expect to see a star player get in that kind of foul trouble. The call on his third or fourth foul was just awful.

Yes, the calls against Holman in the Trinity game were just plain bad. Out of the 5 fouls they called, he may have commited 1. The fact that he kept coming and going from the bench really hurt him IMO. If the size of Trinity effected anyone it was Miller. He had been used to dominating teams with his frame all season and once Holman went to the bench Miller just didnt match up with Spaulding at all. Like a previous poster said, they wont have to deal with size like that very often.

 

Apollo didnt play a great schedule last year. I thought they showed well in the Lex Cath tournament, beating Warren Central. They also played very well vs OHS in both meetings last year, winning one rather handily and losing the other on a questionable charging call/last second shot. The district loss was a shocker for sure. It was just one of those nights i suppose. They play a much much tougher schedule this season IMO with Madison Central, Hoptown, BG, Christian Co, Henderson, plus holiday tournaments like the OIT and Republic Bank.

Holman actually got Spalding in the air several times with pump fakes and up and under moves. He just didn't convert the bunnies. Then of course he got in foul trouble. But overall Holman had a bad game and maybe Spalding(Who is a great player.) had a lot to do with it. I was actually impressed with Miller's play against Trinity thgh. I think he ended with 16 pts. Anyway Trinity was the better team last year no doubt about it. (Owensboro plays at Trinity this year btw.) I do believe Owensboro will be better then last year thgh. A few young players will have to step up to make the jump to real contender. The coaches are really really excited about the younger kids thgh so we'll see. The 3rd region has had some pretty tough draws for the Sweet 16 the last 5-6 years. They're due for a break!

When you are defensively out of position (like he was all day) the refs will call it everytime. I would say that he was used to playing against smaller teams and could get away with just his length but Trinity was one of the "longest" teams in the tournament and standing upright all the time just doesnt cut it.

They do a good job of controlling the pace of their games behind one of the better pure point guards that you will see at the high school level.

Last season they had wins over 4 other teams I listed and they return pretty much their entire team.

They are definitely a long shot, but I don't think any more so than a couple of the other teams that have been mentioned.
