Who are the teams that should be in the discussion as potential state champions this season?

Unless Ballard picked up a few transfers, I wouldn't consider them a contender...

I think I'd also throw Covcath in the mix (challenger)...from everything I've heard, they were the most impressive team from NKY this summer.

 

I haven't seen them so I can't comment. Their schedule should give everyone a good idea where they stand though, as they have games against Trinity, Knott Co Central, Moeller (OH), and will also be apart of the Republic Bank Classic at Lexcath on top of 9th region games against Holmes and Newcath.

 

I did see Newcath and Holmes though and Newcath was already in mid season form.. Their front court duo of McDonald and Weyer is one of the best in the state because of their versatility and the backcourt duo of Moeves and Pangallo are one of the better defensive duos. I also think Pangallo is a top 5-10 pg in the state for 2015. As with most years though, their depth is the biggest question mark heading in to this season.

The last time I expected they wouldn't be a contender was 2010/2011 when they ended up being one of the 3 best teams in the state. Basically I have them there because if they did win this year, I don't think I'd be surprised.

They were the first team I left off.

I think you need to put Apollo (Owensboro, KY) in the mix. They have maybe the top junior in the state with good coaching, good size, skill, depth and athleticism around him. This could be the year that the 3rd region, whether it's Owensboro or Apollo, finally wins some games at Rupp after quite a dry spell.

They're not without experience. Losing Dow and Berry hurt, but Jalen Perry and Corey Douglas are solid players and the addition of Eaves means they'll be darn tough to beat. Any underclassmen you think we should be looking out for come the season's start?

Forgot Douglas was back..I really like his game. Athletic and at 6'7 can change a game with his defense.

 

Looking at their roster, I also forgot Schiavone and Rayshawn Robinson were back as well.

 

I think Schiavone gives them a nice outside threat (atleast from the few times I saw him last year) and Robinson is a nice wing with size and strength.

 

Interested to see how Wilson does this year in his sophomore year after getting clock last year as a frosh.

 

The more I think about it, Ballard probably is gonna have a nice squad this year led by Perry. I think I'd put them in the "Challenger" part though with a "wait and see" mentality. I'll get a look at them 11/29 at Lawrence County. Ask me again in a few weeks and I might have a different opinion.

Last year I caught the Bruins early in the year against Scott County and I love that the early season matchup has become something of a tradition... but I'm not driving to Georgetown on a Tuesday.

 

Probably won't get to see the Bruins until the King of the Bluegrass.

You never know what your going to get when you bring a bunch of new guys together, but they have one guy who would have been a top 2-4 player in the 12th region this year and another guy who would have been top 3 in the 10th region in Ronnie Carson and DJ Jenkins. They also return Hines Jones who I was very impressed with last season.

They are also led by one of, if not the, most successful coaches roaming the sidelines today.

 

I think their potential puts them into the contenders. I would say they are similar to Ballard in that their team won't look at all like last years, so we don't have nearly as good an idea of what to expect as we do with the other teams listed.
