On the other hand, football teams only get 10 games per season while basketball gets 20+. Getting to play one more game in football might be more meaningful than in basketball, for that reason.

I guess the regular season means even less in baseball, basketball, soccer, golf and softball as EVERY team makes post season play.

Why do I have to make this same point every year?

After watching the Beechwood vs. winless Bracken Co. playoff game, my heart bled for the 14 players from BC that showed bravery and effort in fighting the traditionally powerful Tigers. There quite possibly might have been a state record set in the first half, as BC made only two tackles the entire half. Every other play went for touchdowns with the JV for Beechwood playing the 2nd quarter, the freshmen the 3rd qtr., and the backup freshmen the 4th.

 

This imbalance is just not necessary and making the playoffs should be a reward won on the field, not defaulted into. Cutting the field in half reduces the playoffs by a week, puts the season over before December, allows for that much desired Thanksgiving championship weekend, and cuts one travel week.

 

IMO football and basketball playoffs are not comparable. Basketball imbalances can be embarrassing, but the loser can usually get over it without much permanent damage. Yes, the excitement of every team having a chance to win the state in basketball is traditional and easily do-able in three weeks. Football now takes five exhausting weeks and poses real physical risk to both team's players in dramatically over-matched games. The far superior team cannot be coached to give less than 100%, for every coach will tell you that is when players are more susceptible to injury. While the sheer physical nature of the game puts the over matched player at a greater risk. Yes, getting playing time for the JV and Freshmen teams is a positive; but, I just don't think this justifies these imbalance negatives.

 

To answer your initial bolded question though; no it's moronic.

In basketball, Covington Latin was the only winless team in the state. McCreary Central had just a single win.

 

In basketball the awful teams can PICK UP games throughout the season with other awful teams to scrounge a couple of wins out.This just doesn't happen in football.

So let's amend the other sport's postseason. They all play each other twice so the best teams will have it sorted out. Go straight to region tourneys with best 2 teams.

 

They could if they wanted and I wouldn't have any problem with it. But today, all the other sports do it the other way and the ONLY reason football doesn't is because they can't and we all know why. So should they figure out a solution for the one sport that can't or change every other sport to the way the one does it that can't?

 

Playing district games during the season and making them count is the state's solution to having a district tournament in a sport that doesn't lend itself to the typical district tournaments that the other sports have.

It's because there are too many people who think Billy and Bob should get a chance to play in the playoffs because of not they'll be heart broken. We are in an era where EVERYBODY is declared a winner! You don't have to earn anything because everything is given. It's stupid.

 

They aren't winners the worst have to play the best and 99.9% of the time they are eliminated. They get an opportunity to play. That's all. No trophies for getting eliminated.

On the first graph, no it wouldn't. Nothing funny about it. Eliminate one regular season game, elminate the bye, and there you go. Game 10 is everyone's playoff game. I'm pretty sure Indiana played week 3 of the playoffs as we entered week 1. It can be done.

 

On second graph, if you want to compare football to other sports, then it should be apples to apples. Football gets six state champions, why don't all other sports? Seems like we're cheating a lot of kids out of the thrill of a state title by not offering six soccer classes. Agree?

 

Last graph, I'm not saying anything of the sort. I'm saying football shouldn't get to have it both ways. Twice as many classes as some sports, and six times as many as others doesn't seem fair.

I say go to the Class dirstrict champs and do a bracket of them.

Very simple guys.....too many classes. 221 total teams in Kentucky; 192 make the playoffs.....thats 87%. Either take the top2 in each district,

or change to 4 classes. Leave 1A and 6A alone; consolidate 2A and 3A...... 4A and 5A. And please quit with the everyone makes the basketball, baseball playoffs etc. In basketball, Kentucky takes both the District winner and runner-up. That's crazy too. When you lose, your are OUT.

Here's a question in line with this topic without talking about point differential. How many if any, #3 or #4 seeds won games on Friday? For that matter, in the last 10 years, how many #3 or #4 seeds have won. I saw in another thread where someone predicted a district sweep in 3A, district 6 I think (The one with Belfry) It didn't happen.

Play 2 Win .... the way KY sets this up does not take a single 4 team district and have "1 play #4, # 2 play #3 in the opening round. It's a # 1 from one district, playing a # 4 from a different district and so on and so forth. Round 2 finds teams playing other teams within the district in which they played the regular season. There are probably are some 3's that will beat a 2, but agree with you, not many 4's beating a 1. Kentucky cannot continue to have 192 teams out of 221 (87%) make the playoffs. Until they seriously look to change the format, first round games will continue to be a waste of time (for the most part) IMO

I think that 2 teams that took the worst beating in round one should play each other. The winner gets to feel better about ending the season on a win and the loser gets to be the Biggest Loser!

We will have to agree to disagree. When you have only 221 total teams, 192 making the playoffs to TOO MANY. (87%). Comparison....

Kentucky -Total teams 221 in 6 classes, 192 make playoffs (87%)...ONLY 29 do not make playoffs.

Ohio - Total teams 715 in 7 Divisions, 224 make playoffs (34.4%)...491 do not make playoffs.

Both states have 32 teams qualify for playoffs in each Class in KY; Division in Ohio.
