Is 192 teams in the playoffs appropriate?

Featured Replies

Thanks Prep. I'm aware of the format since I grew up there and still own a house there. That's what I was talking about in Region 4. Someone said they though 1-4 in Belfry's district would sweep. But it didn't. I figure some 3's from a district can beat the 2's of another district, but I doubt many 4s beat 1s like you said. I really say do away with the first round. Back in the 80's (God I'm old), the district championship was determined within the season. For us it always came down between Russell and Belfry (I went to Russell).

But the truth of this whole conversation comes down to dollars. They will claim it gives schools an opportunity to play a playoff game and maybe upset the other school, but let's be real, it's about the money generated by the extra week.

Play 2 Win .... the way KY sets this up does not take a single 4 team district and have "1 play #4, # 2 play #3 in the opening round. It's a # 1 from one district, playing a # 4 from a different district and so on and so forth. Round 2 finds teams playing other teams within the district in which they played the regular season. There are probably are some 3's that will beat a 2, but agree with you, not many 4's beating a 1. Kentucky cannot continue to have 192 teams out of 221 (87%) make the playoffs. Until they seriously look to change the format, first round games will continue to be a waste of time (for the most part) IMO

OMG ....the 80's!!!!! Well my HS days were in the early-mid 60's. So please do not feel so bad ( I am still a kid when it comes to HS football in Greater Cincy area -live in NKY). Sorry, did not know you were that well versed on the KY playoffs. Should have known looking at your number of posts and the various topics you have covered.

The people comparing football and basketball are.....not real smart.

The beating a body takes in football is no where compared to what it takes in basketball.

You are putting kids out there who do not want to be there and in some instances they have 0 chance at being competitive...0.

^ The comparisons aren't about the sports themselves. The comparisons are about the playoff systems. The comparison is that if every team gets into the playoffs in every other sport, then football should try to get every team into their playoffs.

Ok, since people want to compare other sports and let everyone in like other sports, let's do it like other sports, I mean since people want to make this ridiculous comparison.

So next year we should only have 2-3 days off between playoff games, a football team could play 3 games a week, just like the other sports, there ya go.

Nobody said the sports should be exactly alike. Just all teams deserve a shot in or at the very least 4. Heck in bball everybody gets a shot in and then if they lose in the district they get another shot. FTR I don't think it should go to that.

First you say that no one is saying the sports should be exactly alike, then two sentences later you bring up basketball?

If we are not taking about football being like other sports, why are others sports always brought up as a comparison?

It is crazy the way people think.

Instead of raising the bar in football it keeps getting lowered.

I'll propose this -

All sports drop their regular season 20%.

All teams then make the playoffs.

These are both high school sports with high school athletes competing and they both have around a 16 week season, yet in one we should allow all the crappy teams in and (btw there are more of them) and in the other we should have a gold standard and narrow this down to only the BEST.

I can't see how that's fair. Unless you are one of those that's wants football season to end so we can start basketball.

Anyway the fb playoff setup is pretty good if you ask me. Even if you're a 4 you get to play somebody you normally don't play. Win or lose it's another game and another week of practice. Best team we have had learned more from two early playoff blowouts than any game they played in.

I say let them all in and let's play some football up into January !!!

Football season lasts about the same amount of time as basketball season doesn't it?
