Is 192 teams in the playoffs appropriate?

Featured Replies

I wish we wouldn't bring up other sports, and how they do it this way or that way in other sports. This is a whole different issue, and safety is involved in this collision sport. There is also a big difference between a blowout and a team that has kids falling down on purpose to avoid getting hurt, yet the KHSAA thinks these kids are gaining something?

4 classes was a good number, but we go through this every year and the KHSAA isn't going to listen.

I know it's not the popular answer but I feel it is way too many teams. To me, it's like a participation trophy. Sign of the times. Not good in my humble, accurate opinion.

Guess what...there were blow outs just like today when there were 4 classes.

I've been posting stats like this in other threads, but I had tracked everything back from 2005 forward the other day in anticipation of these discussions. I didn't have time to go back through 1998 or I would have.

-This year the average margin of victory was 31.34. The final year of four classes in 2006? It was 23.81.

-64.21% of all first round games this year ended with margins of 25 points or more, and that actually represents a three year low. In 2006 it was only 51.56%.

-In the eight years of the six class system we have yet to have less than 55% of all games end in margins of less than 25 points per game, and only twice have there been less than 60%.

-11.58% of 2014 first round games ended with margins of less than 10 points - 11 games. In 2006, 29.69% ended with margins of less than 10 points - 19 games. In other words, there were more close games back then by a wide margin when they played 31 less games.

-There has not been a single year under six classes that yielded as many games with margins of less than 10 points than that final year of the four class system. In three years we had less than 10 such games including last season.

Your prior post mentioned that really you believe there should be five classes. To me, the solution is glaringly simple and was since the day they adopted this asinine system. Either take just the top two teams in each district, or drop back to four classes. I'm good with either, and in fact prefer the four class system. It's been a joke since Day 1.

Agreed. 32 teams to determine a state championship is ridiculous. Personally, I think 3 classes is plenty.

Just not as many...

I am sure someone has posted this before but I wonder how many states have all its teams make the football playoffs...Kentucky and Indiana do and Ohio does not. I really don't know about other states.

Incorrect. Not all KY teams make the playoffs.

We know that team can be given a first round bye, LCA had one last night.

So, why not make the teams earn a playoff berth by at least winning a game. If there is a team that is winless, then their opponent (a district #1) would be given a bye. So last night's game of Bracken County vs Beechwood would not have been played. IMHO, team do not gained anything from the game. Both team members ran the risk of injury in a totally meaningless game.

This would have only affected 5 games last night. There were 11 winless teams this year and 6 did not make the playoffs. The games that would have been affected were Phelps' 69-0 loss at Raceland, Bracken County's 62-0 loss at Beechwood, Somerset's 30-20 loss at Shelby Valley, Hopkins County Central's 62-6 loss at Franklin-Simpson and Harrison County's 67-14 loss at Johnson Central. Four of those games were running clocks with only one of the 5 that has a competitive score.

My bad...was not thinking...about 30 do not...

A solution would be to allow the #1 seed a BYE and have the #2 vs #3 seeds play to determine who meets the #1 seed in the next round.

This rewards the #1 seed for winning a district. #2 vs #3 seeds are normally decent games although there will still be some running clock games. In districts with several good teams it would only leave 1 team out of the playoffs that previously qualified.

There is little monetary loss if any. Most #1 vs #4 games do not make much money or even lose money. It could even help boost attendance at the #2 vs #3 games as some fans of the #1 seed would come to watch their next opponent. It would also make the District games more meaningful meaning more attendance at District games.

Some coaches may not want a bye, unless they have injuries. I would say that the #1 seed gets to pick if they want the bye or play the #3 seed team and let the #2 seed have the bye.

I can't recall the last time I went to a 1st or 2nd round game, outcomes in most cases are known even before you know who the opponent will be.

1. Sounds like Bracken is terrible and may need to play a jv schedule in 2015. I hate that for their program.

2. Sometimes you compete even if you know you will lose that's called courage. Thank God none of our forefathers had some of your mentality.

Leave it alone.

I can't see any coach not taking a bye and instead giving it to the team they would have to play next.

The mentality that even if you lose most or all of your games you still get to compete? It's nice to have to earn something, to fight for it, and not to have it given to you.

Again some of these teams have kids that are scared, for their safety they shouldn't be forced to play a team that is very good and could end up seriously injuring someone, that really didn't want to play the game anyway.

There are plenty of good arguments for and against but risk of injury in a meaningless game cannot be one of them, Every non-district game is technically meaningless and there is a risk of injury by simply getting out of bed in the morning. Beechwood vs CovCath - Danville vs Boyle - BG vs Warren Central and dozens more should never be played because they are meaningless and there is risk of injury.

Who doesn't want to play?
