Buzz saw and over rated team playing a fairly weak schedule........until tonight.

 

That's what I saw tonight.

 

I'm not sure you can call CC overrated...at this point...let them get into the playoffs...bad game perhaps?

I thought Mayfield was more balanced tonight , being effective throwing the ball lets us run the ball better.

Bright was awesome tonight and credit Bacons numerous clutch 3rd down catches for keeping the chains moving and setting up those scores. Bacon had an excellent game tonight. Arnett was awesome. Defense was outstanding..McCampbell big game tonight. These guys were firing on all cylinders.

 

Bacon is as sure handed as they come. If it's in his vicinity, he'll bring it in. I'm sure they've told Arnett not to take the big loss, but 2 intentional grounding penalties isn't any better. Get outside of the tackle or find a receiver in the area.

I agree about not taking the grounding penalties but I don't think there is an outside the tackle box rule in high school like there is in college or the pro's.

Im ok with everything you said. I stand behind weak schedule which can lead to being over rated though. We were balanced as heck though.

 

I knew the bad game against Russellville was coming though.

I agree about not taking the grounding penalties but I don't think there is an outside the tackle box rule in high school like there is in college or the pro's.

Honestly, I don't think Caldwell is overrated. They've got some great players on that team that can make plays at anytime. I think you just have to give credit to the Cardinal staff for a solid game plan and to the Mayfield D for good execution. They didn't over pursue and let Sindelar escape the pocket for big runs and the secondary held there own. There were a few defensive breakdowns in the secondary and some wide open receivers a few times, mainly early in the game, but, as the game went on, the D seemed to have found it's mojo and played lights out. It was a close game at the half and even though Mayfield was up 14-12, it could be argued that Caldwell outplayed them. At that point, Sindelar already had 220 yds thru the air and 2 TDs and Cain had 80 yds on the ground. CC also had 12 1st downs compared to 5 for Mayfield. I think the big turning point was when the Cards were able to stop CC on there 1st possession of the 3rd qtr in a 3 and out and then adding another TD to go up 21-12. Then when they got a 2nd consecutive stop, I think it put the Tigers on there heels a little bit and the Cards kept the pressure on with a late FG and safety to go up 26-12. It kinda spiraled from there. It happens, even to really good teams. The Tigers will be fine and I fully expect them to still be a solid championship contender. They, like Mayfield, needed a game like this to wake them up and get them refocused and also make them a little more humble and hungry going into the playoffs. As for the Cardinals, I think they needed this game to get there confidence back after a lackluster performance last week and it was good to see the offense come around to where they were earlier in the season. There D has been very strong all year anyway.

Many thought it was CAL. Either way, beating Caldwell like that definitely makes a statement. I don't think that anyone sensible will argue against Mayfield being #1 until beaten by a team out of 1A. I still believe that this class is the toughest at the top than it's been in quite a while.

I guess it depends on what poll you go by. I think the AP had CC at #1, maybe another poll or 2 also. I agree with you about how strong 1a is at the top. IMO, it's about 7 or 8 deep with quality teams capable of winning it all.

Was fun to see some football weather for the first time this year!

AA - Attitude & Adjustments, Mf demonstrated both. At half I got to meet the famous Dream Killer. I told him I thought that the reason Mf held a narrow halftime lead was due to some drop balls by CC and Mf penalties. Through the first play of the second quarter we had 6, yes 6 penalties. I told him that championship teams do not make those kind of mistakes over and over and I was concerned and doubting this team ability to win a title. Truth be told though the first quarter is where we had the issues with 5 penalties that killed every first Q drive other than the 1 play 80 yard TF pass that was a thing of beauty. The second quarter saw some on the fly adjustments by Cliff Dew's defense and Joe Morris became animated on the side lines with those repeat penalty offenders and the penalties pretty much ended, we developed some rhythm and moved the ball. The penalty issue has plagued this team of late and it was nice to see it go away. Dew's ability to adjust on the fly is a rare thing at the high school level. CC's offense has been averaging 57 points a game and they were held to 12. The second half was just absolute vintage Cardinal football and quickly made me forget the first quarter struggles. If we can continue to eliminate the penalties that have been such huge drive killers we have a legit title shot. The stark contrast from Russ last week to CC this week are excellent practice for anything we will see in the playoffs and should pay dividends in the latter stages of the playoffs. My the difference a half of football can make. I hope CC can pick up the pieces and drive on to BG. Dream Killer told me before the game that the cold and damp weather worried him in regard to the CC pass game and that proved to be a true omen of things to come. Had CC not had the early drops I think they could of had some early points before we adjusted.

Caldwell had two starting offensive linemen out. By far their worst game this year, it was definitely an off night and hopefully it'll light a fire under them for the playoffs. OCath scares me a lot and could absolutely put Caldwell out of the playoffs.

What a great night for football. Northwest winds and 30 degrees.

 

I want to give the OL some credit in their performance last night. There were some very good pull blocks from Karman that was the difference in Bright breaking a couple of his TD's.

 

Maybe the OL will carry this into the last third of the season. And hopefully we have seen the last of the stupid penalties that are killing our drives

Called out weak schedule two weeks ago. Sorry if I had offended the people in Caldwell. Like I said sometimes you cannot help this. A wake up call this time of year can be good or bad. The Whistling in the Grave Yard is over now. 2A is for real and the 3 of the best teams appear to be in 1 District. CAL, Desales, and Bardstown. Not downplaying Mayfield, but this type of loss by Caldwell is significant. CAL on lost by 3 scores to the best team in the state with their best player out.

Watched replay and the thing that stood out above all was the line play. I knew it was good last night but after watching it on TV I could really see just how well they did. Arnett played a great game as well. Tapia had a solid game on defense as well
