They barely beat a good, but not great, Bryan Station team.

A 36-0 win over a 2-6 Holmes team

 

Is that a bit of nit-picking? Yes. But I stand by my statement. Highlands is still one of the top two in 4A and a very good team, but the are in no way the overwhelming Highlands of a few years ago. Hence, I don't feel that they've been overwhelming.

Barely good Station team? Try telling that to the former state #1 and defending state champ Scott Co. Tell that to Lex Cath, Lafayette who are in the state top 20 and only barely losing to powerhouse FTH. If they are just good and not great. I'll take their good any day.

Wait! What? So there is a chance HHS has to travel to Johnsonville? That would be awesome. I love those trips and so do my Birds!

 

Hopefully we are able to oblige you with that opportunity. Despite being unable to protect our own turf, we absolutely love having Highlands come down to play. Some of the finest people we've ever hosted, Boyle would be a close second.

There are 20 teams in KY that can claim this. And those numbers have come against a weaker than usual schedule.

 

I'll say it again, and again, and again...Highlands is a top two team in 4A and a very good team. BUT they are not what they have been. It's OK to say that they're not an utterly dominant team this year or one of the state's best two or three. Several Highlands supporters on here seem to be struggling with that concept. I say the same thing about Trinity...and have gotten almost the same reaction. Both could quite easily win titles...and I'll STILL say neither is ANYWHERE near as good as what they were several years ago. That's all. Not that they can't win it all or that they aren't good teams, my argument is just that they're not as dominant as they have been and that there are now teams in their classes that have a better shot of taking them down than there has been in the past.

FT Highlands just wins ballgames. It does not matter is they blow they out of the waters or barely win games... It's not like they play cupcake city like other programs. They schedule top tier in state and out of state programs.

HHS is an excellent team but not without a few concerns. To say the are not as dominant as seasons past is relative. The schedule is different, the head coach is different, key personnel are different yet the have just one loss to a very fine Christopher Columbus team. I also believe the outcome of the Elder game doesn't stamp the team with the label of "dominant" or "great" or "overrated". I find it very interesting reading posts about HHS particularly when comparing or contrasting to larger schools. HHS does more with less male enrollment then schools of 3 or 4 times the numbers. My concluding point is HHS has an extremely high bar by which it is measured, whether they are state champion or bow out sooner isn't the only measure of their success.

Easier to stay at the top of the ladder when you've been there for the last 7 years, less to prove having been there and done that. Owensboro may be climbing the ladder, but their schedule is filled with losing records and a 2A school.

When I read these posts I often wonder how many of the games you site to back up your point you are actually saw.

 

The 2 bolded games really stick out to me and I would use those games and scores to prove the opposite point you are trying to make.

 

HHS competed extremely well against an 8A school from Miami Florida. They were very good. As good as any school in KY and Southwest Ohio that the Birds could have scheduled.

 

The Holmes game plan was simple. Get a running clock and get out without injury. No need to embarrass the Bulldogs or run up stats. Five touchdowns on five possessions. One 2 pt. conversion, 4 - 1 pt. conversions. Game over. How anyone could look at that score and use it to diminish a teams capability is just plain wrong.

Before the Columbus game, Owensboro had played the tougher schedule, All year long- Highlands has a tougher schedule.

 

Apollo, Daviess are required for the Owensboro City/County championship (those games will be played every year)

 

Calloway is required for District play.

 

You again seem to have forgotten:

Owensboro played #1 in 5A BG to the final bell and led most of the game.

Owensboro beat #4 in 2A Owensboro Catholic @ OCath

Owensboro beat #3 in 5A Warren Central @ Warren Central

Owensboro beat #4 in 4A Madisonville @ Madisonville

 

Highlands beat:

Holmes 2-6

Campbell 4-4

Harrison 0-8

John Hardin 2-6

PT 4-5 (lost to Mville)

#9 in 4A CovCath 4-4

#4 in 6A Bryan Station 6-2

 

I'd say someone could rank either team #1. HHS lost to a good Florida team, although Columbus led big for most of the game, and Owensboro had BG on the ropes, leading most of the game. Owensboro has some quality wins (all on the road), and Highlands has big win with Bryan Station on the road. Station got handled by St. X and BG beat St. X.

As a person with no dog in the who is number 1 fight I'll chime in. Owensboro and Ft Thomas are deserving of the top spots in the polls. People can spin close losses any way they want to. You can look at opponents win lose record if you want to. The best thing is the eye test. I've seen both teams on tape against their opponents and the eye test has Ft Thomas at #1.

 

Now trust me it was painful to say that but they are the favorite in 4A for a reason. If both teams played each other 5 times I think FTH would win 4. So I have Owensboro #2.

 

Teams 3-6 have had moments of good and bad, but at this time they are 3-6 for a reason. They can still make some noise in the postseason

Fair take Lex. I also have HHS #1 just because of their great program and consistency (not having seen them). For Owensboro to win, I think Owensboro's Big O-line would have to control the LOS and let Owensboro's speed in the backfield work it's magic. Highlands defense last year didn't seem like much, not sure this year. Owensboro would have to control the clock and limit the opportunities of HHS offense - big task. I see a higher scoring game to be honest if they played. I hope this is the matchup in the finals.
