The "champions of character" quote is a little over the top but generally speaking I would have to agree. I think this should be put in place for football more than basketball. I've heard a simple "there is ANOTHER flag on the field" before.

In basketball, as long as they are not over the top, it will not be a problem. The main idea is to not announce incorrect information regarding fouls or timeouts, not give point totals (I don't know a coach who likes a scoreboard WITH points scored on it), and be sure they are not talking over FT shooters. Also, telling fans to get on their feet or make some noise is not their job.

Someone mentioned milestones, I think those will be handled the same way--let the opposing coach and officials know about it and when it happens, stop the game and acknowledge the achievement. No big deal, not taking that away. For the record, I've never heard of an announcer being a part of a home-court advantage.

I wanna go pro, papa! LOL I may get more demonstrative on home team baskets, but I'm NEVER out of character. I keep the book while I announce, so when I give a stat (player fouls,team fouls, etc.), it's correct.

I'd like to see flops penalized with a technical.

Aren't useful. Fans, coaches and media (radio, tv, papers) rely on those. Easy to lose track when they're not being pointed out (and some scoreboards don't have foul totals, only a bonus button, which may or not work).

 

2 or 3 is good for close foot on the line plays when you might miss the signal.

 

And I'd argue the type of foul pointed out (over the back, charge, reaching in, block, intentional, flagrant) is useful too so the fans don't start loudly questioning why.

We need to put the kibosh on high school announcers becoming like those in the NBA or College, like Louisville "THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE DEEEEEEEEEEAN" if you remember Tyquan Dean or "THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SEES-CO" for Francisco Garcia.

 

And I grew up a Louisville fan, but I could easily why that would drive rivals bonkers.

They are fixated on defensive play.... time and time again on offense there are players getting away with extending their forearms to gain an advantage....

 

Both offense and defense need to be points of emphasis...

Fans should question where in the rule book these items are…because they don't exist. Part of the reason is for the POE is to insure that PA announcers don't give out incorrect information. BTW: Fans are going to question calls, regardless of what the PA announcer says….as most of us know, fans ALWAYS have the best angles to the court

This time a thousand. My biggest pet peeve is the lack of calls for an offensive player extending body parts. Also jump shoots kicking their legs out on a flop. I was a jump shooter ( or tried to be ) but it is over the top with the call.

This!! And leaping into a defender while shooting, few of the "top" players love doing this.

I agree, but the game has gotten way to physical. Defenders "ride" players constantly.

The two games I've been to this week have been business as usual for the announcing. No changes at all. I did hear a newspaper writer tell that the POE has been taken to heart in Indiana and they are strongly enforcing it. As fans, the important thing to remember is that there's a chance the PA announcer could be wrong. It's what's in the book that counts.
