I listened to ESPN Radio on the way home from work and heard about this. Based on what they were saying and what I saw in the photos, I can say that I was expecting much worse.

 

I'm not saying Peterson didn't take it too far, but that I'm not sure 'negligent or reckless injury to a child' is warranted. I'm thinking people who really abuse their children in the heinous forms of child abuse aren't as open and forward about it as Peterson is in text messages. Did he take it too far? Yes, there's a good chance he did based on what's shown, but I'm not really sure what happened warrants the charge.

 

Here's my issue with the whole thing: reading some of the comments in that article, it seems like Peterson is being 100% honest about his role in the whole thing. I'm not sure the mother in Minnesota is doing the same though. The kid's story seem to get worse when he gets back to his Mom. Sorry, but if AP punches a 4 year old in the face, that's death, but the kid comes back home to Minnesota and then later says that his Dad "punches him in the face"? Also, notice how she found a doctor who said a switch, "and possibly a cord".

 

Finally, isn't it just a bit convenient that the grand jury returns this one the same week as the Ray Rice incident despite the fact that the alleged incident occurred this summer? Maybe it's just me, but if the injuries are horrible and someone is dead to rights and you know they're out living with some of their children, don't you think you'd get an EPO and send someone to get the kids right away?

Either way, I'm going to say if Adrian Peterson hits a kid in the face with any kind of conviction, then it's going to make for a much better picture for the media for his Baby Momma to get her settlement with.

 

Reading some of the articles, everyone admits that the kid was with Peterson when he told his Mom about it on Skype. If you are a kid and you are that afraid he'd punch him in the face you probably aren't going to tell your Mom about the incident on Skype while there with him and knowing that she was in another state?

 

In my opinion, someone is telling that kid what to say or letting him talk for awhile and running with the worst of the worst out of what he says.

I'll do things like bump into something in my apartment while walking in the dark and the bruise will look way worse than what it feels.

 

Working in Legal Aid, I've seen and heard a ton of sad stories and seen the end results of them, i.e., people walking in with very visible injuries and being too ashamed to look anyone in the eye and not being at all receptive to talking about the incidents, etc. Different situations because it isn't their parents disciplining them of course, but in terms of my interactions with it in the workplace, it's not really something that passes the smell test when it comes to a kid telling his Mom about it on Skype and the Dad texting her with the details.

I would imagine that in his world, as a guy who is a running back and takes hits from NFL defenders as a profession, that, whether right or wrong, in his mind, this is something that he went through as a child himself and that he now sees as a means of building character and wanting what's best for his son as a means of instilling discipline. I'm not saying that this is best, because I can't agree with it on the whole, just that I can see how the end result wound up looking much worse than it went down.

Me too. And it was always the one you could reach at the end of a branch which meant it was greener and more flexible, thereby creating good whipping action and hurt like hell!!!

 

And if the switch didn't pass inspection, you went back until you got one that did!

Peterson said he disciplined him the way he was disciplined as a child in East Texas. Obviously he was abused as a kid. The cycle of abuse continues.

Didn't AP have a child of his die a year ago due to abuse?

Twitter and social media are filled with the "what? I used to get whipped by a switch all of the time" comments. I assume those same people have their toddlers stand in the front seat of the car while not being restrained.
