September 5, 201412 yr Report: NFL officials asked teams to consider signing Michael Sam to practice squad | Dallas Morning News Sad that teams may have felt pressure to sign him based on sexuality and afraid of the backlash the media would have given the NFL. Dallas bailed out the NFL.
September 5, 201412 yr This really is a non-story to me. He is on a Practice Squad. He has some talent, let's see if it develops. The Cowboys should try about anything to shore up that defense.
September 5, 201412 yr Hats off to the Bengals for signing Still. He did not make the team, but they signed him to the practice squad so he could afford treatment for his daughter. Not sure how much pressure was put on them, but a class move. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/bengals-bring-back-still-to-help-him-pay-for-daughter-s-cancer-treatment-032403812.html
September 5, 201412 yr It doesn't surprise me that they did it, but I also don't think its appropriate.
September 5, 201412 yr This should surprise exactly no one. Shaun Alexander was on an ESPN radio show on XM the other day and I thought he came off really well when asked about the whole thing. He was more or less saying, "this is just a lot of talk for any 7th rounder".

September 5, 201412 yr Did Shaun give any personal thoughts on Sam? Shaun is a pretty religious guy, correct? Basically, he said that when any 6th/7th round guy came to the team, he wished them all well and told them to work hard, because they would have a very limited opportunity. He was welcoming but realistic with them about the business of the game. When he was asked specifically about Sam, he said a teammate was a teammate and that there were guys on the team who did their own thing on their own time and that was just kind of that. He said lots of guys were model husbands and parents, lots of guys had sex with tons of women, and Sam was a guy who happened to like other men. He said that was his business off the field just like all the other teammates he'd had and didn't really differentiate him any for it. I think Alexander was a great interview. Definitely very well spoken and articulate, even with a delicate topic.
September 5, 201412 yr There might be a "Sam Rule" just like the "Rooney Rule" in place. I don't give two hoots about sexuality but even the thought of something like this is scary. Back to Sam, I am glad someone picked him up. I want to see if the guy can play or not and I believe it is good for the NFL if Sam sticks.

September 5, 201412 yr Glad to hear it and everything I have ever heard about Shaun has been positive. For sure. You could tell that the guy conducting the interview had a lot of respect for him as well just in the presentation of the interview.
September 5, 201412 yr He had an opportunity to make a team and didn't... The team he was drafted by didn't sign him to their practice squad. Are they going to do this for every 7th rounder that doesn't make a practice squad? We all know the answer to that... NFL looks silly for doing this, IMO.
