Reds @ Indians / Indians @ Reds (8/4 - 8/7)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason we don't see the other C DH is because if Pena would happen to get hurt, wouldn't the Reds lose their DH if they had to move Meso to the field?

Yes. That's exactly it. It doesn't hurt them for him to play first base because if the catcher gets hurt he can move to catcher and the backup first baseman slide into the catcher's slot. If you don't have 3 catchers on your roster you don't want one of them in the DH slot. Completely understand why Price wouldn't do that.

Yeah losing the DH, and making the pitcher hit would have been huge considering what the Reds have been running out there for a DH.

Precisely.

So if the Reds had to rely on a relief pitcher for a base hit in the 9th (or extra innings), you'd be okay with that?

This Negron kid is playing and hitting well. He will probably sit out tonight.

He's 6 for 27 in his last 10 games (.222 average) with a .278 OBP & 7 K's. He did have 2 RBI's last night, though.

I'd much rather have Meso getting 4-5 AB's during the game than Heisey. And who's to say you would need a relief pitcher to PH in the 9th? Just because you lose the DH doesn't mean you lose all the pinch hitters off your bench. And of course all of this is dependent on Pena getting hurt.

I was thinking in my head he was hitting well and looked it up and was a little shocked. Seems like he has been putting some good swings on the ball and hitting it hard pretty often.

I've hated Steve Smith and his terrible decision making this year but I will not give him grief over that decision. If it was a 3-2 ball game then yes but up 9-2 and the play was that close, it's not a terrible idea to send him.

Agree on not liking Smith. Go the other way on the decision. Up 9-2 in the 9th, why bother sending him? Play station to station and get the game completed.

Live game situation where you get to see the arm of the RFer and the cutoff man. You see how they execute their cuts. He was called out but you never know when that information will come in handy.

Reds had 5 batters last night who an average under .235. 4 of them were under .230 .

And a guy hitting .298, with a .370 OBP with 18 HR and 54 RBI sitting on the bench despite the DH, and the fact that the Reds have really struggled to score runs.

Hamilton 8

Bruce 9

Frazier 5

Mesoraco 2

Pena 3

Heisey 7

Negron 4

Cozart 6

Latos 1

Negron will never be accused of showboating around the bases during a HR. Dude looked like he was already at second base by the time the ball bounced a second time!

Does Negron's play make Phillips more expendable?
