Front Load Washing machines

Featured Replies

We have a 6 year old Maytag washer that now sounds like an airplane is taking off from my basement when it hits the spin cycle. It is new enough where it does not have an agitiator in the center. Not sure if it is worth being fixed?

Have an opportunity to pick up a front loader really cheap. The person who owns it, hates it because it often "smells". She said you have to hand clean under the rubber gasket way too often.

Any one had any experiences?

Thanks

You can find online tutorials to fix just about anything yourself these days... I have a friend who fixed his own dryer several months back using online tutorials (I think he may have even found a tutorial video online). He may be the least handy person I know - literally didn't even know how to change a flat tire without an online tutorial - but he fixed his own dryer.

Something to consider, at least.

We have had LG FL since 2006.

LGs with the rubber gasket get the reputation of the smell. While the gasket can get mucky. We found leaving door open and letting it dry out helps a lot. Leaving the door closed just allows for fermentation in the unit.

The smell issue is not usually just the gasket - its a trap in the drain area that is to catch coins, paper clips, etc. and it needs to be cleaned out. It can get really bad. There is door to access it and a pull out drain tube to drain the catch area. A lot of people rarely or never clean that and that is where the real problem can be with the odor.

We had the control board go out on ours a couple of years ago - thing was flaky for a while till it completely died. LG redesigned newer ones to avoid the issue I believe. Ordered new one over the web and no problems since.

All of what Bluegrasscard said and an occasional bleach soaked load keep your front loader happy and smell free. In other words, if it is a deal, jump on it.

Sounds like your idler pulley is bad. This is what your belt wraps around that spins the drum. Idler pulley is less prolly less then $20. Not real hard to change. the time consuming part is getting at it. May get lucky and have to only take out a few screws.

We have a front loader, and when it's done, we're going back to a top loader. Not only is the issue around the gasket, but it's also in the soap dispenser tray cavity. Mold grows in there like you wouldn't believe. The manufacturer's fix, pull out the tray when not using it. Yes, pull out the wet, soapy tray and sit it on top of the unit when not using. It still grows the mold, just not as quickly.

Our Maytag lasted 20 years and was used when we bought it after we got married. I'd fix it if it's just six years old, sounds like it would be an easy and not real expensive fix, especially if you take it to repair shop instead of having a house call.

We have a front loader too and when it's done we're going back to a top loader too. It's too much maintenance!

Sounds like an episode of Fargo.

Yes.

Yes.

We had a front loader for seven years under warranty. During that time practically every part of the unit was replaced at least once. The stinky rubber gasket thing, the entire electronic panel, even the drum agitator part.

Broke down again last month. Warranty expired. Replaced it with a top loader. I will never ever go back to a front load washing machine again.

FYI this months consumer reports has a great buying guide on washers and dryers

Our front loader sometimes shreds clothes...From what I can tell they get caught between the drum and the gasket during the spin cycle. Can't even count the number of tshirts I've had torn apart. We will go back to top loader when the front loader goes kaput. Agree on keeping the door open and the detergent dispenser getting moldy.

We did not try leaving the door open. Our laundry room is a small "pass through" from the garage to the kitchen. Way too much traffic to leave the door open. Can't get through.

So it looks like the ship has sailed on the front loader (the lady's daughter ended up needing it.)--long story. I looked up the video and have decided to pass on the home repair. I have a pick up truck and a few strong hands to help move it. Who in NKY should I go to for a repair?

Thanks!

Complete Appliance on Dixie highway near CovCath has always done good repair work.
