Shooting Sleeves

Featured Replies

Are there any advantages to wearing a shooting sleeve?

I see them being worn all the time now, and I think it's primarily a cosmetic thing where people are following Kobe, Wall, etc. But do the sleeves offer any functionality?

I would imagine that the padding on the elbow area could able to provide some protection if you fall, but I'm not sure that it's something that's very functional unless you've already suffered an in injury to that area and would like some extra protection or maybe as something preventative if you are a smaller player who throws his body around a lot and looks to draw a lot of fouls. For someone wearing one just for looks, I'd imagine the padding on the elbow could actually be something that hinders your shot.

Thoughts?

Are too many kids wearing them or is it much ado about nothing and something that's no different from a headband or pair of socks?

Aren't they for supporting your elbow from getting a hyperextension type injury? The way an elbow gets torqued during a shot is somewhat unnatural...kinda like the same way a pitcher flings his elbow out on a fastball. I would think that someone who takes a LOT of shots may benefit from the extra support or compression...someone that shoots as many as Allen Iverson used to do especially.

I am on the computer a lot and there for a while when I got a new chair I had this weird angle to my keyboard. I had to put compression on my elbows and just below it to try to get it to stop hurting...I'm getting pretty old though. I think it is called bursitis or something like that.

I was under the impression that a kid had to have a note from the Doc to be allowed to wear a sleeve of any type. So if they are using one it should be for a medical reason. My daughter plays volleyball and was wanting to wear what they call "bump sleeves" which i was not opposed too, but after getting with an official at one of her games she said probably not a good idea without a Doctors note. I dunno if the rules vary from sport to sport. :idunno:

I could be way off on this....

Cosmetics and style only. Anything the NBA does filters down to the college and high school level. I'm surprised the National Federation has not banned them all together. Used to be called the Allen Iverson rules. Anything he wore would be immediately banned in HS. If the pros quit wearing them so would high school. I bet there are very few if any high school players that have a note to wear sleeves from a legit sports Dr. Usually let go as long as they match the uniform color. Amazing all the sudden we have all these elbow injuries in basketball. Me personally could care less if worn, but they are not worn for medical reasons.

Unless there is a rule saying there has to be a note from a doctor, I'm gonna say that the majority of them are purely cosmetic...

If kids want to wear them, then I'm fine with it. I just think it looks weird when a kid is all decked out in accessories and doesn't really have much game. If someone thinks they look good, then it's really not something that bothers me that much. I do think that if I were a trash talker and someone was wearing one opposite me, they'd better be pretty good, otherwise they might hear something about it just so I could see if it gets in their head.

On the other hand, if a kid has broken an elbow, had a really bad bruise on it, or is a smaller player who goes into the lane and draws lots of contact, then of course I completely understand it. I'm more talking about how it's usually something that I don't really understand unless there's some type of functionality to it or you are so good that no one can really say anything about it.

I thought that some of the pros were asked to wear them since some of the Tats may not be family friendly?

I also thought that a note was required for HS ball.

Doctor's note is needed at the high school level. How many coaches keep those notes handy on the bench in case they are questioned by an official? Probably not very many.

They don't make anyone shoot better so I think they are worthless. They look as stupid as the yoga pants that players wear now.

...

In 4th grade AAU there is a kid or two a game wearing one. No one on my son's team wears one, but I'm sure it is only a matter of time for a couple of them before they are also donning the sleeves. Mine will not be one of them.

Cosmetic. Kids wear then cause it's what they see on tv.

My buddies and I joke about it.......if a kid wears a sleeve, they must be pretty good. Our favorites are the young and/or skinny kids that wear one that is too big for them. Looks like they are wearing a big, baggy sock on their arm.

i couldn't imagine wearing one of those, I have to feel free when I'm playing.

Commando!

Not a fan.

Wasn't Iverson the one who started wearing one first?
