Had a conversation this morning with an employee of the club, some thoughts worth sharing: * Brandon's injury will put him past September 1st and his 10/5 rights will kick-in. "Now we know we're stuck with him for the duration." * The recent winning streak is not viewed as a good thing in some corners of GABP. "Really messed up our plans for the next 6 weeks." * Robert Stephenson, for the first time, is now available in a deal. The signing of the Cuban pitcher makes this possible. * Conversations between some members of the Reds' organization and Dunn's agent have left both sides admitting they are probably better off not re-connecting. The next time Adam is in a Reds' uniform will be when he is inducted into their HOF. * Zobrist and Prado are most likely because they can play 1B and LF once BP is back, however, "we can't win any bidding war because of a lack of quality prospects as compared to other organizations". * No expectation of Votto playing again this year. "We're assuming he won't play again until 2015". * Latos is among the most popular guys in the clubhouse and the organization, and is the one (vs Cueto) they are more interested in keeping. Cueto would have been shopped hard if they were still 7 games out before the deadline. Now it will likely be the offseason. * Chapman also would have been "available" before the deadline if they were still 7 games out. * This recent winning streak may have "set the organization back a couple of years, to be honest".
July 11, 201412 yr Don't agree that they should make Stephenson available, but doesn't surprise me. If he's available, they should be able to swing a deal for any 2B that's on the market IMO.

I take it the organization was looking to unload some big contracts before the deadline, and rebuild the farm system with some top prospects they would have received in return. Aside from Cueto, Chapman and Phillips who else would have been available?
July 11, 201412 yr I understand the point, but disagree that a winning streak sets the organization back or upsets the front office. Oh, I think it definitely does. Think about it. This team has a lot of money tied up in Phillips, Bailey and Votto. It restricts what they're able to do. You've got guys in Cueto and Latos who are due huge paydays soon. Can't keep both. If they're still 7-8 out, they can trade BP, trade Chapman, and trade Cueto (or Latos), and get 2-3 top notch, real close to ML ready prospects. You pair those 2-3 guys with the likes of Bruce, Hamilton, Meso, and Frazier and you've got a young, still relatively inexpensive nucleus that they can build around. Give it a couple seasons and that team contends with a rotation of Latos (or Cueto), Bailey, Leake, Cingrani, and Stephenson. JMO.
July 11, 201412 yr Well if they don't want to go for a playoff run this year just sit tight for the next few weeks and they will be 7 back in no time. This current team can't sustain this level of play. I've been on board with trading Chapman at any point.
July 11, 201412 yr Agree with HT. It's been fun, and the starting pitching has been great, but I doubt they sustain either. Tread deadline will be exciting.

I don't think they'll be giving away any offense if they decide to try and make a playoff push.
July 11, 201412 yr and I got pelted with rocks & garbage for asking "IF" they were to retool, how should they do it? Glad to see I was thinking the same way as the front office.
