July 14, 201412 yr The Reds didn't overpay for Homer. He would've gotten as much, if not more, had he hit the open market. Cueto and Latos will both command a good deal more than he did. Upwards $20M+ per season will be what it probably takes.

With that said, I think Latos comes cheaper considering his recent health issue. Of course, JC aint' too far removed from his issue either. So, it may be a wash. Hoping to keep one of them. My guess is Latos.

My guess is Latos. I don't disagree with any of this. Just pointing out that Homer would've gotten more elsewhere, so hard to say they overpaid. Unlike a lot, I think Homer's contract actually makes him a very trade-able asset.
July 14, 201412 yr Homer's deal may be considered good if you are the Yankees, Sox or one of the other big boys. For a small market team, we'd been better off putting Stephenson in the 5 hole and using that $ to keep Latos/Cueto.

July 14, 201412 yr The Reds keep being called small market yet they have re-signed every person that was going to be available except Choo and they had Hamilton ready to take his spot.
July 14, 201412 yr Because if you have a game like Wednesday where 2 starters get hurt or you go into an extra innings game, you'll have relief pitchers having to bat in crucial situations or guys playing positions they've never seen before. You need at least 4, preferably 5 bench spots. I don't disagree but that's a problem that can be fixed for the game the next day. I'm not sure they need all those arms at once but if it keeps Hoover off the mound I'm all for it.

He probably doesn't have enough value to get the Reds anything worth having, but I would test the waters. Assuming Simon can't keep up his production, if you trade away Latos or Cueto you will be losing production in 2 of your starters in the second half. Can the Reds stay in the race if they do that?

Pitched full seasons each of the last two seasons with the Reds, has lights out stuff, and has picked up right where he left off last season after recovering from his injury this year. Dude is a sure fire ace. Same with Cueto.

I think he'd be a trade deadline guy. A team with a pressing need would jump all over him if he stays on the same pace. His age is an issue.
