I think he'd be a trade deadline guy. A team with a pressing need would jump all over him if he stays on the same pace. His age is an issue.

 

Simon is 33. He just hit his career high in innings with 116. In his 7 seasons, he's combined to throw 449+.

I don't think Simon has that much trade value, plus if think it be silly for the Reds to trade him. Cueto is the one to trade of you are going to trade an SP. His return would help the Reds in many areas.

I disagree about Simon. If they are sellers at the deadline, you trade Pasta for what you can get from a team deperate for a starter for the playoff push. If he can keep this pace up, he's a perfect piece.

If you're trading starting pitching, your first option should be Bailey and that contract. If that doesn't work, then you trade Simon and insert Cingrani/Stephenson. The focus should be on keeping Cueto and Latos. Everybody else is tradeable for the 'right', long term bat. Not the 'rest of the seasonn' rental.

Don't sign these guys when they are at the top of their performance. Agents / players read their own press clippings and will want to be paid commensurate with that.

The organization is fundamentally broken and needs to be over-hauled in several ways to be able to continue to win long-term. You don't want people thinking big picture and long-term running your organization? The Votto deal was horrible and everyone gets that, but when your owner is a fan, you run into deals like that one. Phillips is loathed throughout the organization and they'd like to have been rid of him (and his contract). You can't re-sign Cueto and Latos, so at some point you have to get what you can for one of them versus letting them walk. If you're "in it" it is tough to sell Joey Bag-o-Doughnuts on long-term moves.

Same reason Larkin was kept as long as he was, if you trade him away, the fans will go away because they "like him."
