Gay Reparative Therapy... Can you "Pray the Gay Away"?

I think you probably know how I view this, but I know we have a lot of social conservatives on here that may lend some credence to this. I think probably Michelle Bachmann and her hubby do and probably Pat Robertson too. What say you?

Then we can go down to the bay. Possibly make things out of clay. I just may.

And we'll make hay, all the way to that bay, each and every day I say. Hip, Hip, Hooray.

Atheist convert to Christianity every day so I guess anything is possible.

What would "say, hey, Willie Mays" say?

Some, because of pressures from their church, society, or their family, want so badly not to be gay, (as they didn't choose it to begin with), and they want so badly to believe that God can "Heal" them, so they allow themselves to live under that state of denial and become delusional, all the while sharing that delusion with folks around them who lack any real understanding, and too want them to be "Healed".

The attraction that they have for the same sex never truly goes away, yet they'll typically not let their church and family know to help keep the myth alive that they can be "Healed" and they also fear rejection from them, and also the pressures for themselves to stay rooted in denial are very strong.

The lie tends to continue, and ultimately the person eventually resorts back to acting out on his feelings knowing full good and well he never came anywhere near being "Healed" throughout the whole ridiculous fictional fruitless process.

Now he lives with guilt and can't accept himself because of his upbringing and belief system that has convinced him that he is a sinner because of this.

Life for him could be so much better if he just got a grip and realized that there is nothing wrong with him, and he need not live under the guilt, and to also either help family and friends rise up and understand, or move on to be around more accepting types who do.

Self acceptance can make a world of difference in ones life versus beating oneself up over it. Staying in denial will ultimately only keep the individual in a state of emotional tragedy, and waste precious time in what could've been a realistic happy fulfilling life full of love, yet now because of their secret double life they're setting themselves up to sneak around and live within a world of unloving promiscuity, compounding their self guilt and self hatred.

I certainly don't think that's what "God" would want, but those that live in this sort of denial are just setting themselves up for more pain and misery down the road.

^I think you've answered this before, but refresh my memory. Do you think one can convert from homo to heterosexuality?

I have talked to two people who believe they are no longer gay but I do wonder if maybe they were actually bisexual so they were able to "go the other way" to use the term, and lead a heterosexual life. One is married. My fear/guess was the homosexual side of him would eventually start trying to creep back and ruin the marriage. So far I have been wrong, I just hope I stay wrong. The other is not married but really doesn't date so I wonder if he has just chosen celibacy??? I don't know.

People who are gay believe they are born that way. They refuse to believe anything different. One thing that is a fact is that people can change and do everyday. I just refuse to believe God would allow a person to be born gay, but of course my opinion is worth as much as the next person.

I don't understand the argument... People are born with all kinds of terrible health and mental conditions. Gay tendencies seem small compared to being born with AIDS or drug addiction, etc.

To the original post... It is an issue between that individual and God. But the Bible does say that we are to deny ourselves and follow. We aren't very good at following this instruction in the US. Hetero and Homo alike.

I'm surely not gay . I'm certainly a social conservative and I claim Christ as my savior . And I certainly think some humans are born with very strong tendencies to be gay . And no amount of praying ,short of God doing a miracle in that persons life is going to change that tendency . Not saying it can't happen , just that it isn't the norm .

I tried to concert a lesbian once in college but I tripped over 3rd base and had to removed from the game. No dice...

Exactly. Well said.

So you believe God would not allow a person to be born gay but WOULD allow some to be born with mental illnesses to lead them to become serial killers?

I don't know why God allows people to be born gay but on the same side, I don't pretend to understand God's ways. I know and fully accept his ways are far above my understanding.

It could easily be said that some straight folks refuse to believe anything different too, and can't bring themselves to understand and believe that being gay is not a choice.

I can't say that I was born gay, but I can certainly say that I didn't ask to be, and that the feelings started quite young with me, and no matter how much I tried through adolescence to be straight, it just wouldn't happen.

Why did I want so bad to be straight? Undoubtedly because early on in my life society had convinced me that homosexuality was wrong, leading me to initially think that there was something wrong with me.

I'm not striving to change because I see it as a natural part of who I am, and I've learned to accept it for what it is, and learned to accept myself for who I am.

Gayness is not who I am, but just a part of my reality.

My reasoning has always been "Why would God make me this way if it were wrong?", and that society is very mislead on the whole topic and don't know what the hell they're talking about. To make matters worse, it always appeared to me that the bullies were celebrated, while gay people were scorned. Nothing in that seemed Godly at all. It just seemed backward, hypocritical, and unloving, and many times this ugliness came from the so-called good loving Christians.

Who better to know, or at least be closer to the truth than the person walking in gay shoes?

I've never seen any input from mountain ref that would indicate any insights or authority on the topic that would make his assessment appear trustable and knowledgeable, and certainly far less than someone who has experienced a lifetime of these socially unchosen unacceptable attractions.

Let me ask you mountain ref... were you born straight? If so, what makes you so sure, and why should anyone believe you? I'm assuming that you're quite certain of your own persuasion and probably pretty certain that it feels quite natural to you without you injecting any choice in the matter. Did you choose to be straight?

If it feels uncomfortable for anyone to challenge you on this or find it ridiculous then perhaps you'll understand how a homosexual feels to be challenged when he says that he never chose to be gay.

Honestly, if you truly had a strong tendency towards being heterosexual why on earth would someone forego that to be with the same sex, giving up the heterosexual being that they supposedly were born to be, and also set themselves up for social ostracism?

If you start from the foundation that you feel that being gay is wrong, then I can see why you would conclude that God wouldn't allow anyone to be born that way, but I'm not too keen on your foundation of thought, making your assessment sound mislead and uninformed.

What does amaze me is how through this website you've been given every opportunity to understand, yet you "choose" to remain in disbelief and mislead on the topic.

You are exaggerating terribly by trying to purport that gay people turn straight everyday. That's just absolute nonsense.

Can homosexuals experiment with heterosexuality, and can heterosexuals experiment with homosexuality? I'm sure that it happens here and there, but no doubt for the most part, folks partake in just what they are inclined to.

If you don't like salmon, sure you might give it a try once in awhile to see if you ever feel any differently about it, but as a general rule, you're gonna order from the menu that which you are certain you like and have an appetite for.

Unless someone really has some sort of weird backward clinical behavior that makes them do things that they're really not inclined to, then why would so many people worldwide claim that they didn't choose to be gay?

I'm not buying that there's this weird clinical behavior running rampant, but I am buying that a certain significant percentage of humanity is gay, and that it's a true reality of the human condition for many, as it has been throughout the history of humanity.

Do I personally need anyone's acceptance here? Not really. Since coming out years ago and receiving unconditional love from family and friends, which gave me a wonderful foundation to move on confidently with my life, I've done OK, and I am glad that during the last 30 years little by little society is coming around to understanding, but I still have concerns for the struggles that many are still having in life and only believe that if I can help enlighten in any way that I'm somehow doing my part to hopefully help create a more understanding world on this matter so that so many people don't have to live in fear of just being themselves.
