May 12, 201412 yr Some good choices here, for sure. In particular, Singles, The Crow, High Fidelity, O Brother Where Art Thou, and Dazed And Confused stand out in my mind. Lots of great soundtracks to the Wes Anderson movies - Rushmore being the gold standard amongst those. I don't think any list of greatest soundtracks is complete without at least mentioning the soundtrack to The Graduate. It's the first non-musical movie soundtrack to make use of mainstream lyrical pop songs rather than entirely/primarily musical scores. Another GREAT soundtrack that gets forgotten about is the soundtrack to the early 80's hip-hop movie Wild Style. KILLER soundtrack. When the Beastie Boys said, "we're from the family tree of old school hip-hop"....this is the music they were referring to. (Clyde, I'm assuming you had this one jamming on your tape deck at you peeled out of the Conner parking lot back in your glory days, right?) I think Forrest Gump should get an asterisk by its name (I believe I've defended this argument on here before) because it included far more songs than the average film soundtrack, thereby giving it more potential to have a bunch of songs that people enjoyed, and because it is essentially just a Top 40 from 1950 through 1982. Kind of an easy cherry-pick, in my opinion, and it's not hard to make a WHOLE lot of people think, "Hey, I really like that song!" when your demographic can pick from 3 decades worth of pop music's greatest hits. I'm a pretty big fan of Inside Llewyn Davis, Romeo + Juliet, Almost Famous, Trainspotting, and Hackers to add to the list.
