If I'm not mistaken, a foul-tip is a live ball. A foul-tip is defined as a knicked/tipped ball off the bat that is immediately caught by the catcher. Therefore, the runner can steal. A foul ball is a dead ball.

I've always wondered this. Why is a 'foul tip' and a 'foul ball' not the same thing? Such as, if it's a fou l tip and the catcher catches the ball, didn't he catch a foul ball and the batter should be out?

You guys are getting confused. The rule on live ball foul tip is similar to the rule on foul tips on 3rd strikes.

If batter has 2 strikes and foul tips the ball directly into the catcher's mitt it's strike 3 and he's out. It's a live ball if that is not the 3rd out of the inning.

If the batter fouls it and it hits the catcher's mitt then mask then arm and he catches it before it hits the ground, it's not strike 3. And it's not a live ball on which you can steal.

20 years ago JD would not have had to leave early to make it to 3rd. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Also, would this scenario have taken place in an All "A" game? Would like to get RCC9 involved in this discussion.

Only if it hits the mitt before hitting their mask or chest or legs does it remain live

That brings up another scenerio then. Let's use the same criteria..runner steals, the pitch is tipped by the batter. The difference being the ball goes straight back to the catchers mitt but deflects off the mitt instead of being caught. The bat, ever so slightly because it was tipped, changes the flight of the ball as it always will off a tip no matter how much or little the bat makes contact with the ball. Does the runner have to go back to 1st? Afterall it really wasn't any different than the tip ball into the catchers mitt, the only difference is the catcher didn't hang in to this one.

Ok thank you. I posted my previous post before reading yours and it makes perfect sense.

My answer would be no. No one is out in the All A. Everyone gets a chance to be safe. It would hurt their feelings to call them out. Everyone deserves an opportunity to be called safe. They only call outs when they play the big schools. Everyone gets hits and the winner is determined by best looking uniform. Then everyone sings "Kunbaya" and gets to go to the Silver Grove Dairy Bar for ice cream afterwards!

 Even this NewCath fan finds this fun, well done Allen.

Here is another one: Clyde is at bat with two out, CFS is on second. Clyde by some miracle rips the ball into the corner for a double and CFS scores easily...the pitcher, Sweet16 appeals and throws the ball to first where the base is tagged and Clyde is called out for missing the base on his way to second. Does the run count?

Talking about Post #1...

In Post 12 the run counts..

Nope, no run for post #12

JD is correct. If you miss first base and are called out on an appeal it's a force play ie the same as if you were thrown out at first on the ground ball. Run does not count.

Here's where it gets tricky.

Batting order is B1, B2, B3, B4, etc.

B1 made the last out of the previous inning.

Instead of B2 batting first to start the inning B3 bats and walks. B4 now comes up and has a 2-1 count when the defense appeals to blue for batting out of order.

Explain to both umpires what your ruling is .

It seems like I've seen something close to this...After B4 took a pitch that was immediately after B3's at bat it's too late to appeal...I think. Lineup just keeps going, but if they had appealed before B4 took a pitch, B2 would be called out.

Clyde, can you verify the bold part? Unless HS is different than pro rules I thought that that situation would still be an out. I saw it once in a pro game and it was deemed strike 3 since the ball did not leave the catcher's frame and did not come to a rest on the catchers leg.
