I was gonna say.

My 8th grade son will be in attendance all day Friday. The deal was that if he had All As then he could attend the whole tourney. He fell a little short so he only gets to come on Friday. He will be held accountable for all work that he misses. I wish he could come the whole time but he knows the deal.

Don't have a problem with it if they are not constantly missing school, if they make up the work that is assigned, and that their grades are not of an issue.

Nice topic! Bring them, it will be a wonderful learning experience that they will remember the rest of their life.

My son, who is quite intelligent (they say that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, although I question the veracity of that adage), was touch-and-go vis-a-vis advancing to the first grade. Reason - he had a heck of a time learning how to skip. I was tempted to nickname him Skippy, but ultimately did not on the, um, advice of the boss - I mean, the wife.

They probably don't test much for stuff learned as part of the Sweet 16 experience.

I missed Wed-Fri every year from 4th grade until I graduated and never really fell behind on any school work! It was worth it, nothing like the sweet 16!

I recall going to the whole state tournament while in high school in the mid-70's and it being considered an excused absence even though my school was not in the tournament.

Part of Scott Co's "make up missed days from snow" plan is that all three middle schools are making up a half-day on Wednesday night DURING the Scott Co first round game. Mandatory for teachers to be in the building from 4-7pm for parent teacher conferences.

 

On the overall topic, I like PP2's plan.

If your school is in any state event and kids want to go support the team/choir/etc encouraging that school spirit has value beyond testing. Anymore, it is hard to get the student body to come to their own gym to support teams.

 

If I were king, a ticket would be an excused absence. Make up the work upon return.

I overheard some middle schoolers say that they may not be in school on Friday because they are going to the Sweet Sixteen on Thursday night. Then I overheard a teacher tell the students that was bogus, school comes first.

 

What are your thoughts? If you are not a student at the schools' that are in the tourney and you don't have a sibling on the team, is missing school on Friday considered acceptable?

 

If they go to Thursday night session, then no reason they can't go to school on Friday.
