I overheard some middle schoolers say that they may not be in school on Friday because they are going to the Sweet Sixteen on Thursday night. Then I overheard a teacher tell the students that was bogus, school comes first.

 

What are your thoughts? If you are not a student at the schools' that are in the tourney and you don't have a sibling on the team, is missing school on Friday considered acceptable?

You are talking about the Commonwealth of Kentucky here.

If you hold your kids accountable for the work they miss what is the problem? May not be a great idea if they miss a ton of school, but if they're students who can overcome a day or two of missed school I don't see a huge problem with it.

I missed Wednesday-Friday in HS for the state tournament. If you have not missed much school I see no problem with it. Plus you need to make up your work.

Nice topic! Bring them, it will be a wonderful learning experience that they will remember the rest of their life.

My thoughts as well. Hold the kids accountable and make sure they get their make up work done. Now if junior already has missed a week of school since the first of the year "due to illness" then that may leave it open to further discussion.

My 8th grade son will be in attendance all day Friday. The deal was that if he had All As then he could attend the whole tourney. He fell a little short so he only gets to come on Friday. He will be held accountable for all work that he misses. I wish he could come the whole time but he knows the deal.

Too many kids pretend that they don't have to make up work when they miss school. Then they're the ones asking me for extra credit the day before grades are due. They then proceed to look at me like I'm a monster for making them write me an essay outlining why they deserve extra credit. Then they look at me like I'm the devil himself when they realize that the essay isn't the extra credit.

In 1993 I took my son out of kindergarten to see my alma mater play in the Sweet 16.

 

He was able to make up the work.

I am probably not the person to ask, since I have been going for 45+ years. I always go for the whole tourney. Never had a team playing in the tourney untill GRC played, twice just a few years ago. Took our son since before he could walk. My husband and my first date was at the state tourney. Watched him play in the state tourney back in the 60's. I had not met him yet though. As some have said, great experience and memories. If you are a true lover of b-ball, you don't have to have your team play....you will pick a favorite when you watch them play. Have I missed school to atternd, you bet, when I was in school and also teaching.

They have all missed many days from the awful winter.
