Zach Kiernan/UL???

It seems as if I'm the only one that thinks this, and I'm alright with that but....

I was honestly shocked when I saw the title of this thread. Following that was more shock that ND was thrown out there. He's a tall kid with a good frame but I do not see him playing at any of the schools mentioned. If you say you bench 225 "about 4 times", that means he's probably gotten 4 once. I just don't see the size needed to play at all of the schools that have been mentioned. Also, if he does make it to one of these programs, I'll be the first to say I was wrong. If it's UK, I'll root him on. Again, I'm sure Rick Minter knows a little bit more about this kind of stuff than me, but I just don't see it.

I don't know NineOh. If anything his alleged lack of strength may make him even more attractive to the colleges. They look at his frame, that look at the his level of play on the field (in spite of the lack of strength) which was pretty good last year and I would expect to be even more impressive this year, and reason that with a couple of years in the weight room, he could be a really, really good player. As supporting evidence for my reasoning, I present Shaun Sester from Highlands. Watching him play in high school, I frankly wasn't all that impressed (sorry Sester family if you are reading this). Wasn't particularly strong and looked to have very slow feet. But he was 6'7" and smart. Purdue gave him a scholarship. Worked on his strength and foot speed and he started last year as a red shirt freshman and made the all Big Ten freshmen team. Barring injuries, he'll start for 4 years at Purdue and I would have to think has a good chance of getting drafted. I could be wrong about Zach, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he didn't get some scholly offers from some big time D1 programs. Take care.

I'm a little stunned that he can only bench 225 4 times......

not that uncommon for a 16 or seventeen year old kid. Especially one that is 6'7. his body has not caught up with him yet. His bench could increase by 100 pounds as a freshman in college on maturity alone. What you look for when watching offensive lineman and trying to project them to the next level is their size, attitude (do they like contact), are they a knee bender or a waist bender, and do they stay off of the ground. The latter is important. It means they have the necessary feet and flexibility. Strength will come.

He has a lot of work to do, to compete on a D-1 level if that is the case.

He still has another year in the weight room to get the muscle he needs before he hits the college turf. :thumb:

Only problem, he's not an offensive lineman. :D

I hope he dedicates himself to it. Screw basketball son, get stronger. Unless of course he's not worried about playing at the next level.

Don't quit basketball if you don't want to. Enjoy high school, and play as many sports as possible. Take it from someone who regrets not doing so. If you're truly good enough, playing basketball isn't going to stop you from playing at the next level. ;)

No clue if that is true or not.

However, its irrelevant. None of those other d-lineman had what big schools are looking for.

The D-Line for NC was great last year. Zach had 2 guys blocking him most games which let the other guys play well. When Zach was not doubled he play great. Teams had to pick there posion last year with that line.

Lets hope the line picks it up again this year because he will be doubled every game.

What good does it do to come on here and say something like that?

Please change your name and your avatar if you're going to be posting stuff like that about kids from the school that I graduated from.

He wasn't. Sour grapes or something going on there. Only Justin Smith was better. Just be proud of the attention this will bring NewCath football.

He's only a Jr. in HS, he's got good pedigree and a huge frame, he'll get stronger. Bench isn't everything, Shaq couldn't even bench 135 lbs the first time he attempted, don't try to convince me that he's not a strong man. I don't think the kid is Hercules but I'm not by four reps one bit. I think L'neck's comparison with Sester was a good one, I hadn't heard of Sester prior to his Sr. season and didn't really impress me all that much but what do I know. If you are 6'7" with athletic ability you have a very good shot at major D1.

Zach not only has a connection with ND football through his father Mike and uncle Frankie... his uncle Joe played football for UK.
