Jason, it was an interesting topic. But I have found that "reason" is rarely a cause for the KHSAA to act, particularly regarding football.....

I hate to be kill-joy here but the KHSAA has already wandered into the grey areas of implementing ARBITRARY and CAPRICIOUS decisions in regards to football.

 

While Mr. Franks concept is fun forum fodder it is definitely arbitrary. And that is not what KHSAA is supposed to do. KHSAA is a function of the KBE. And the KBE is a function of Kentucky legislature. And the Kentucky legislature is a function of the Constitution. And the Constitution prevents laws, policies, rules, etc. that are...arbitrary.

 

Enrollments and distances between schools is objective, not arbitrary - hence why they are used.

How about 3 super classes with the top 24 teams in each.. 1a and 2a together, 3a and 4a together and 5a and 6a together. Once playoffs start, seed the top 8 teams in each division to get a 1st round bye and base the super division on results from the prior 4 years, It may look something like this:

At first blush, it is easy to say that the small schools would have no chance. That was my first thought. But if you did this, I think the small schools would catch up and be able to compete. Why? Because the top players would want to play for the super class teams. I believe Beechwood would pick up players in the concept. It is one of the best, if not the best academic schools in the state. It is a small school culture which some people like. The facilities are top tier. I think you would see students/athletes that may currently go to Dixie or Cov Cath or other area schools decide to attend Beechwood so they could play in the super class. I believe Beechwood loses some players to CCH these days because CCH is seen as a higher level of competition in their complete schedule. It may take 3 or 4 years, but Beechwood would have enough athletes to go full two platoon and compete with anyone.

 

I think the same would happen at other small schools. Mayfield would pick up students from all of Graves County and perhaps even neighboring counties. Corbin, Somerset, etc. ... all these schools would gain players IMO.

As a Collins fan, district games against Central, DeSales, and Scott County would be awesome and playoff matchups with Beechwood, Covington Catholic, Highlands, Newport Central Catholic would be very fun to watch.

Super class would still have T winning most of the time with X and HHS fighting for second and third place most years. At least over the past 10 years. If you take it down past 16 teams you would really have huge inequities.

So, for fun, lets say you did have a super class.

 

The obvious members would be (in no particular order): St. X, Trinity, Scott Co., Highlands, Bowling Green.

 

After that the membership gets tougher to identify.

 

Maybe the new kid on the block - Collins.

Maybe some 6A and 5As that have been knocking on the door from Hardin county and Northern Kentucky.

Maybe some 4As (currently) who have had runs a few years ago but have not been able to get around you-know-who - Boyle, LexCath

Maybe the large Fayette County schools who have the largest student populations behind the Green Monsters and Scott County.

 

But can you put together 24 to 32 teams that would be actually competitive year in and year out and where at least half would have shot of getting to the finals? Hardly.

 

Kentucky is a relatively small state compared to states that have 'super classes'. And football does not get all the best athletes at some schools, especially the large ones where soccer is strong (Fayette, Jessamine, etc.)

 

Some have proposed the 'private class' - an interesting concept until you realize there are only 13 or 14 private schools that play football - and most of them are in 4A and lower.

 

A super class would just be another re-arrangement of the 6 class system that would suck all the top and some less-than-top large to mid-size schools in and free up state trophies for other schools who today are less competitive. Maybe that is what some want. That was obviously the goal of the 'super district' in Louisville.

 

We know that many competitive schools of varying student populations do not meet in the playoffs and that prevents some great potential match-ups. But its the price of a 6-class system in a small state. Is this discussion really an offshoot of the 'watered-down' view of the 6 classes?
