Yes, absolutely. As Mentsch stated, if you live in fear, they win. Plus I enlisted in the Army when I was 19/20 to defend my country and possibly be in harm's way. While I wouldn't be defending the country by attending the Olympics, I would feel safer in Sochi than some of the other situations I could've found myself in.

For me its not a matter of safety. I just have zero desire to go to Russia and spend my money there.

I do expect some sort of terrorist event during the Olympics...also thinking this is the most likely Super Bowl to have some sort of disturbance as well.

I was in Atlanta visiting my grandmother during the 96 Olympics, but I was only 8 at the time and couldn't really grasp the magnitude of what was going on.

To answer the question, YES, absolutely.

 

Additionally, calling Sochi "Russia in the winter" is a real stretch. I don't think many people are aware, but Sochi has a very similar climate to Greece and Istanbul...in fact, it was 63 there today. It is one of the prettiest places on Earth, but truly, about the last place that should be hosting the Winter Olympics. There are about 1,000 articles worldwide about whether or not Sochi is too warm for the Olympics, how different the conditions will be, and if it will even be too warm for their snow-making machines.

 

In terms of avoiding the "bloodshed" and "multi attacks", if you start living in fear of that, they win. I'd be no more concerned about that in Sochi than I would be at the Super Bowl or the World Cup.

Rule of thumb: if you have to import snow to your venues you shouldn't be hosting the Winter Olympics. Russia has many beautiful cities that are buried in snow this time of year, those should have been used. Heck, Sochi would make far more sense to host a Summer Games, if you were hell-bent on them being an Olympic host city.

 

All of that said, if I had money and vacation days to burn, I'd absolutely take my family over there and wrap ourselves in Ol' Glory. I love the Olympics.
