I'll give you Highlands has had better teams than CCH every year since 2006. I do think there were years in that time that the Colonels could have beaten the Birds. Especially when Bir was the QB.

 

At any rate, I sincerely hope for the sake of the rivalry, the Colonels pull it out this year. They're due.

The rivalry is in no danger of dying. I'm fine with the recent trend lasting longer.

4th down pass into the EZ was high. LB did a really nice job of forcing the pass high. Would have won the game.

What kind of runner is Darlington? Is he a down hill guy or does he have a good amount of agility? But the names you listed above sound like solid return guys. I would try to get Erpenbeck the ball in open field a few times and kick returning might be it. You have the fastest kid in school history. Have to get him the ball at some point. But I know McDowell and McLure (not sure about McGinness, just don't know enough about him) are very fast themselves.

First let me say this, Highlands has been on a different level than all other NKY schools the past 10 years. In general they have been at a different level than all KY schools not name Trinity.

 

Now to the recent past vs CovCath. Starting in 2010 the games have for the most part been very competitive. By competitive I define as a game in the 4th quarter that is within one or two scores. For the 2 score games to be competitive the losing team has to have mounted a serious scoring threat or the wining team scores late in the game to seal the victory. Here are the past few years:

 

2010

Highlands 27 - CovCath 20 (Statistically not a real close, however last play of game ball hits the hands of Covcath WR at Highlands 15 yard line, 5 yards behind any Highlands player)

 

2011

Highlands 42 - CovCath 37 ( Very tight game, back and forth final offensive play is the one mentioned above Pass slightly out of reach of CovCath WR to give the Colonels the ball inside the 20 with a minute left on the clock)

 

Playoff Highlands 49 - CovCath 14 ( Not a close game, Highlands came with a totally different offensive game plan and controlled the LOS. CovCath tried the same game plan as game one and didn't have a plan b when it didn't work)

 

2012 Highlands 35 - Covcath 21 (Competitive game Highlands pulled away late in the 4th)

 

Playoff Highlands 28 Covath 13 (Again very competitive game for 3 1/2 quarters, Covcath conceded when on with 3:00 minutes to play and 4th down at the 45 they chose to punt it to Highlands. In all fairness Highlands could have pushed in another score but chose to take a knee in the final seconds)

 

2013

 

Highlands 42 - CovCath 6 (Not as close as the score indicates. Highlands dominated from the get go and probably could have put up 60 if they chose. CovCath was still reeling from injuries with a young in-experienced qb)

 

Playoff Highlands 28 - CovCath 13 ( Much closer than anyone expected. The combination of Dressman and Wagner caused issues for the Highlands D, keeping this game tight until late in the 4th.)

 

 

Those are the scores, with my editorial comment. Has Highlands dominated.. Yes is the rivarly dead.. NO Are the games still must see NKY football .. absolutely!

Absolutely the kicking game needs to improve 100%. Litzler (upcoming Jr) came over from the Soccer program last year and put his first year into kicking. It was spotty at best and I can't say whether he's planning to kick again or not. If he does, he's got some heavy duty practicing to do.

 

Darlington (Junior) who is also the RB, is definitely more of a downhill runner, so if he returns it would be on KOR and not Punt Return. My guess on Punt Return would be between Seniors McLure, McDowell and Junior McGinness. Erpenbeck (Senior) would be better suited at KOR in my opinion- less shifty than the Mac guys but his speed is obviously terrific.

Hope Litzler comes back. I feel like kicking is half mental and that could have been a big problem for him last year especially if he was a sophomore kicking for the first time. Can only assume he'll be better this year if he comes back. Do you know what the kicker on this past freshman team was like? Is he playing?
